THE FIFER
got this on site mail Jilly Coleman jilly.coleman@btinternet.com01:56 (18 hours ago) We have had NWHU 2010 N5884 and Red race band number - 2032 in our garden since Sunday 27th May 2012 late afternoon, so just over 3 days now. He does not appear injured, but he fell out of our tree and proceeded to walk around the garden unsteadily. We thought it might be a very young pigeon separated from parents, but soon realised it certainly was not our usual wood pigeons and that the poor mite looked like he/she was suffering from exhaustion! We just about managed to read the ring on his leg after following him around the garden on all fours with our glasses on!!!! He has not been handled, but enjoys being near us. I left a message with the NWHU on Monday reporting this very beautiful bird, but with no response. He feeds several times a day with a selection of wild bird food mix (which he seems to prefer)and white rice, sweetcorn, peas, rolled oats and sesame seeds (I found this suggestion on line) and a big bowl of water. I will not contain him as yet in case he is just recovering and wants to move on, but as the days are continuing - he won't let me nearer than a foot away. He just seems happy to eat/drink on the ground and then fly up to our roof or next door roof and watch all the wild birds that visit my garden all day long. If the owner does not want this bird - I need to find a suitable rescue home for him and will need suggestions please!!! I would like to know from the owner what he will do with this gorgeous character if he does wants him back, before handing him over, after reading some awful stories online. Please phone Allan or Jilly on 07977 001 031 We live near Radlett, Hertfordshire. I have been given a phone number from the RPRA of someone who lives close in Watford - who might help out. I have again left a message, but had again no response. Jilly

Jily
Guys, It took me time to find this thread!! I'm the lady you have helped Thank you all so much for your contact, offers to help and reassurance - I have tried to send emails to all concerned, but wanted to post here to make sure I didn't miss anyone out! I must admit I was so worried when he first dropped into the garden, as we have no experience with domesticated birds, so hence proceeded to do a massive internet search/phoning our vet and trying the union to no avail, but then thank goodness finally finding this wonderful site. I think he enjoyed his 4 day stay, basking in the sun watching the many varieties of wild birds flying in and out of our garden to feed at their table, and having his very own private bowl of food and water that I had to serve to him several times a day and he would waddle over to me (strange he only would eat from them on the grass - but I couldn't leave them there, as my dog would have eaten it all, so had to keep putting on a separate table - but he would not go on the table - I couldn't understand why!!??)!! Do you think I should try emailing the NWHU to let them know the little one was here and to respectfully ask if they could let me know if he ever returns? Or would I be wasting my time? We can only hope the little fella stays safe - we miss him, he was a little beauty. Paul thanks so much for the phone call tonight - so appreciative for your offer to help and sad at the same time as I'm sure he would have been safer with you. We shall keep your number if this should happen again. Jilly
billt
Hi Jily, Thanks for your help and concern for the pigeon, it's worth a try with the NEHU to see if it made home, by your description the bird had become dehydrated with the heat of last week-end and with your help obviously recovered so hopefully is back home. Thank you

Jillywell as in any walk of life Jilly , there are ,it appears some who do not care , i can speak for the vast majority tho , we do . it may have been something as simple as a holiday which has made the owner fail to get in touch with you . most racing pigeons who become lost , and who arent injured , after a few days of food and water can make there way home , i hope its the case here ,and would like to thank you ,for taking the time and trouble to help this bird on its way .
