Best Advice In Pigeons

The best advice I have had was first of all from Taffy Bowen who explained that I should select my stock birds from my best racers and replace the stock birds with the best of the racers at the end of each season without ever increasing the stock bird numbers. This has meant that my selection is based on performance under local conditions which has proven it's worth over again. He also showed me that matings must be sprint to sprint, distance to distance and so on. He then convinced me that pigeons need to be trained to do many things not just chucking them out of a crate and allowing them to make their way home. He introduced me to the clicker and the buzzer so that the birds would understand when they should trap to the loft quickly and many other things to many to list here. Taffy's advice took me from a frustrating position at the bottom of the results list looking up to the much nicer view looking down.

Mike Armitage of the Lion Brewery, London, a complete stranger to me, explained how to operate the bull system of breeding which has been a fantastic help in producing some marvelous pigeons and given my loft a lot of strength in depth. The bull system can allow me to produce many well bred pigeons from a very small number of top performing cocks and give me the option of having my widowhood cocks rear a youngster sired by my very best stock cocks.

Do as I do treat it as a hobby (some people take pigeons far too serious sometimes)and if you pick up a wee bit of pool money here and there all the better but most of all just enjoy yer pigeons and forget any you lose and just worry about what you have left in the loft

Can't really remember the best advice given but the advice I would give is that everybody should go and buy a mirror. When things go wrong the first thing you should do is go and stand infront of it. The answer will not always be there but 9 times out of 10 it will.

Good question this one! I agree with Blue Chec Pied about the mirror, how very true!

Ive had alot advice but the one that sticks with me and ive heard often is " You get out of Pigeons what you put into Pigeons"

My Auld Man told me this alot!
