Does club/fed averages sway your decision to send to races knowing the weather for the weekend is going to be horrendous?

What I'm trying to ascertain is would club/fed birdage benefit in the long run if averages were done away with.

i think winning an average over the year is an example of how good you are at club level over the year. av'e been runner up in combine averages winner of combine averagers at club level on certain races i have been guilty of putting all eggs in one basket so to speak but you never know what happens on a race day members can win 9/10 race and get a smash and not get a feather on the last race. belive me i have learned a lesson good luck

I never give averages a thought until someone says i've a chance of winning this or that average, no way i would send pigeons just to win them though. However i do believe that the average winner is the best loft in any given year. My preference is to pick races to have my doos ready for and have a wee punt on them. usually the yearling derby and the longest fed races as well as the SNFC races.

Disagree slightly you could have a guy win every race in your club but miss a timer in one race Not saying the guy winning the averages hasn't done well but sometimes it is not a true reflection

I think averages should be worked out in a points system. If you dont want to send your birds every week you are still in the averages for the longer races. Too many good birds are lost or thrown away when you start chasing trophies. How many times have we said to ourselves I will not send this week because of bad weather/birds not fit enough ect. We send just the same as we dont want to be out of the averages

To many good birds thown away for average chasing ( Thats my thoughts )

Want to win every race, but don't throw pigeons in to a race just to win it,

Want to win ever average there is, some more than others, but again I would never send a doo unless I thought it was more than capable of flying it.

There are flaws with averages, but no more than that with using a points based system.

so does it mean if a guy misses one race he can not compete in averages in some clubs :emoticon-0138-thinking:

If say the averages are the inland averages then you have to clock in every inland race to compete, same for channel ave, young bird aves etc.

ok so if the top guy misses one race hes out can give false result :emoticon-0138-thinking:

CAN YOU TELL THE FLAWS IN USEING THE PIONTS SYSTEM AS OUR CLUB USE BOTH SYSTEMS WHITCH I THINK IS THE FAIREST WAY

Sorry have just seen your post Whitty. The flaws with the points based system is that a fancier can win the old birds points trophy by only sending to 5 old bird races out to 150 miles, say for example he takes the first 3 postions in each race, this down to the fact he is a good doo man, has good pigeons but more importantly a great location.

I have no problem with a most points old birds based system, though i do believe that only your first pigeon should count and possibly you should have to complete the full program of the club / fed race calender.

Still prefer an average winner, though as many members have said it can be cruel if a loft has been ultra successful throughout the season only to miss out because one race was a disaster, I remember 10 years or so ago when myself and my dad where leading the combined average in the Lanarkshire Social Circle by 17 hours going into the young bird national, this after 23 races which included 5 races at 500+ miles, in effect all what was required was to get one back in race time from this young bird national 250 miles, the race turned out to be very poor and no pigeon was timed at our loft. Disappointing but that's the name of the game, we weren't the first and wont be the last.

How is your points based system competed for????
