andy Burgess Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 having put most the youngsters on the grass today in 2 baskets ,gave the section a good clean .left the 6 i put in on Friday and 1 bred for us added Sunday walking about me as i cleaned (most still have yellow down on there heads) .almost finished and woosh 1 of them decides go for a fly ,landed on a neighbours shed ,then off into the sky on a nearby house roof where it stayed for 10 minutes before dissapearing .thats lost i said to myself . told Babybird when home from work , i had lost a youngster , 1/2 an hour later it appears on the loft , tried in vain to get it to come down ,it landed in a hanging basket ,where i caught it and placed it back in . amazing as it had only been weaned over a few days and not been out at all

just ask me Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 either sold or gave a hardy young one to a friend cant remember which bird was never out of my loft or there's a few year later it was basketed by mistake for a race from i think 160 mile could be further it came back to mine that day the owner could not believe it when i told him the bird was here he was delighted as it had bred him a few winners
THE FIFER Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 a few years back I gave a pair of white birds right out the nest to a fancier from Nottingham who was up visiting, one day I was waiting on my race birds and the white dropped in, it was one of the whites from Nottingham it was racing from Dunbar just over the Forth, I phoned Nottingham and asked how he was doing with them to be told he had them at Dunbar but still waiting on one, he was very surprised when I told him it was here, he sent up for it, the next year it was back at Dunbar and homed to Nottingham, but he then raced it further north and once more it dropped into me, he didnt wnt it back so I gave it to a Fellow club member he bre a good pair from it, they flew steady for a while,
Guest IB Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 I think there are a few learning stages. Youngsters seem to get a location ‘fix’ when they are in the nest bowl, possibly from sunrise/sunset and the phases in between them. When they are in the viewing cage they seem to build up a local location map to go with that ‘fix’. And before they finally take to the air they get a mental picture of the loft and where it is on the local map. What makes me think this is my experiences with kamikaze youngsters that get on the wing before they get a chance to see the loft and its surroundings. I’ve noticed they quarter the sky as if using some sort of grid, searching for home. That seems to be able to get them to within 50 foot of their loft – I’ve seen mine land on the roof of the house one door away, on either side of my house and loft. They seem to know the loft is around here somewhere, but don’t recognise it. So they look for other familiar things, like loft mates, or being called by a voice they know etc. JMO
Guest strapper Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 had a yb come into the loft when i was down the club one friday night, the mrs got it in and put it in a basket in a shed..this bird could not see out.i came home rang the owners number, i thought although it was a gb pigeon it wouldnt have been that far away...as it was still squeaking.well the bird was from birmingham..some 2 hours by road from me.?well anyhow i took the bird with me on the sunday to louella,s intending to chuck it out passing birm.well forgot all about it and remembered as i was down loella,s drive.i slung it out there.later that day whilst home and sitting down having tea..a bird landed on the loft.yes this sqeaking youngster had returned.anyhow..cut the story short..transfered the bird over and as a yearling topped the welsh north road fed for me...6 weeks later next doors cat had him!
