budgie Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 Is it wise to split a pre-potent pair to see which sex is putting them down.My concern now that i have one pair is that i am getting to many brothers and sisters and i want to avoid a close inbred situation.?

It might just be that this pair have nicked, but you will never know until you split them and try them with other mates. If you are in the position of being concerned about having too many brothers and sisters, then now is certainly the time. You seem to have enough from this pair to keep you going. If they nick with others in your loft then the future is bright.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 You'll never know if its the pair that pre potent or if its one of them thats the superstar unless you split them. Would you not say a true top breeder is one who breeds top racers with many different mates??Obviously if you split them you'll be putting them with other birds you think highly of. just ask me Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 for future breeding plans be a must to split them a pair never stays together here more than 2 year year in a row

Guest IB Posted January 2, 2012 Report Posted January 2, 2012 I'm still building a team for the long distance, and I've a long ways to go yet, but I have always changed the stock pairs every year. Firstly, because I give their offspring 3 years to prove themselves, and wasn't happy to take any more from them until their line was proved. It's easy enough to put them back together again after 3 years for another year's breeding. I did that 2011 and will re-pair another pair in 2012; Secondly to create lines that provide their own cross without having to go outside for it; Thirdly to find out who is throwing what with who ; Fourthly to identify the family(s) that's producing the goods so that I can go back there for a back-cross when needed.
