:scotland: :scotland: JUST GOT MY BHW DELIVERED AND SEE ITS FULL OF BIRDS FOR SALE AGAIN, AS I DONT THINK ITS KIND TO HAVE PRISONERS, I WOULD LIKE YOUR VIEW,S ON THIS, AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED BIRDS ARE MEANT TO FLY NOT KEPT IN AN AVIARY, OR JUST FOR BREEDING AS MOST OF THESE BIRDS FOR SALE WILL BE DESTINED FOR. :emoticon-0138-thinking:

My dad hated prisoners but he flew up until the 80's. There was very little chance of any birds of prey attacks. I have broken out old birds and lost them flying after a short time. One hen was hit x3 times until she never returned. So for me yes prisoners, but they will have a good avery to bask in the sun etc. atb MJB :002:

so you don't believe in having parrots, budgies and other cage birds as pets then?

:scotland: :scotland: ACTUALLY NO I DONT, DONT EVEN LIKE ZOO,S WE WERENT PUT ON THE PLANET TO SPEND THE REST OF OUR LIVE,S BEHIND BARS UNLESS WE,RE NAUGHTY, PEOPLE SHOULD JUST LET NATURE DEAL WITH THINGS, INSTEAD OF BREEDING THIS AND THAT IN CAPTIVITY THEN UPSETTING EVERYBODY BY RELEASING THEM, IF CERTAIN BREEDS ARE DYING OUT THERE,S ALWAYS A GOOD REASON. I bought 3 stockbirds few years ago from europigeon.nl. The 2 hens its an 06 bred, I managed to break them out. Then, the an 08 bred, I lost it. Thats what they said, you win some, you lose some.

I don't keep prisoners either, and yes it can be costly.

The thread reminds me of the reasons behind that 'rule' which I made when I first started back in pigeons around 10 years ago. I got my first pigeons back then, I bought a matched pair of Kirkpatricks from LPW.

The cock was a young bird and he got out past me after only 3 days & disappeared off the face of the earth. The hen was a yearling which I broke on her own after 21 days. I discovered the next year that she was barren, and wrote to LPW about it. They were going to take her back, but I reckoned her odd behaviour when I first got her was down to her always being a prisoner and I wasn't prepared to send her back to that, so I kept the bird, and LPW didn't replace her.

On the subject of birds for sale in BHW, I hate the way some are advertised with a well known fanciers name in a Banner Headline at the top of the page.

Then comes details of the birds.

Then comes details of the guy that's selling them - who aint the well known fancier at the top of the page whose name attracted you to the advert in the first place.

Have to say i'm not a fan of Prisoners and try to break every bird i get into the loft. Its not so much that i am averse to keeping them in, they are just a nuisance who have to be locked up when i let the others out.

My attempts at breaking them has had mixed fortunes but overall have lost a few when trying them out.

Sore one was a Dk Ch hen i bought from Martha Van Geel direct, never looked back when i let it out. However! i broke the Ck that i bought the same day and he is Sire to my Equipoise hen, some you win some you lose.
