The White Rapido Man Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 12 pair of stock matched and put together last sunday 10 paired and hens locked away. Im having problems with a couple of big dominant hens. Ordinarily I wouldnt put big to big but given their bullying nature I didnt have much of a choice.....and on paper, I really fancy the pairings over the others... Any tips as Im not ready to give up yet...oh and they are hens and not cocks!!

DJWa Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 the 2 suggestions you already have are the best way to go imo another option is if flying out just let the pair you want paired out togetherbut if you dont let them out over the winter i would not do thisas they wont be fit enough to escape any bop and if pairing up wont be so alert to them

I'll keep at it
OLDYELLOW Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Likes been said the answer you got was good enough I prefer to feed hens in boxes week before let them bill through bars and pair up , then when you put them together much less hastle as are already paired and if wanting to run a stud cock to them the hens are much more accommodating
andy Burgess Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 some good advice there , have struggled with some pairs myself in the past .
fletch Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 seperate section is the best wayanother trick is put hen in one side of box with bowl then put another bowl in other side of cock and they will both go in the bowls and call after half hour open the box up to let them together, they should go in a bowl together if all ok
JohnQuinn Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 put the 2 u want to pair in an empty section for a couple of days, works for me. Never fails
gulkie Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 another way is put pair in a basket feed and water for about 2 daysand they will pair

andy Burgess Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 all sorted now............thanks to all who replied good stuff , well done , which option worked ??
The White Rapido Man Posted December 13, 2011 Author Report Posted December 13, 2011 good stuff , well done , which option worked ?? I put them in a spare section for a couple of days....not joy. All the other pairs had gone down in that time, and all nest boxes taken. In the end I put the cock on his own a section and the hen in another so they were separated and isolated..... after a couple of days I locked them back in the nest box together and that evening the hen was dipping her head nicely..........perhaps loneliness drew them?...who knows, but it worked!
knoxjn Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 when i had a bigger team i used to pair up again in november especially if you are changing pairs gets over the fighting and mucking about once settled split up when you pair up in feb or whatever you will get a full round no problem its just the usual it takes time and patience
Guest geordiejen Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 do all of you have one pair locked away in a breeding box when breeding?
dal2 Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 do all of you have one pair locked away in a breeding box when breeding?Ye mostly until the hatch
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 Heard of people letting the pairs out individually round the loft when trying to force pair.At the same time heard a few widow specialists say the only place a widow cock should find his hen is in the box.Depends on the system you intend to race with
Guest geordiejen Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 i was thinking on pairing my show racers up.then putting all the pairs in the one open loft.should this be avoided as maybe the ones i pair each other to will split and go with a different bird.also need to think about cross treading too.
