dal2 Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 I have now tried the gold cup for the last 3 years huvnae made the result yet but am getting closer but the biggest thrill do far was timing my hen fae tours this year she has been unlucky in the past as I tried her at the gold cup last year and got her at 11am Saturday morning then sent her back to clermont that year and timed her at 8am the next morning but she has given me 3 decent efforts now and I have been over the moon to see her every time none more so than tours this year as I had sat at the loft fae Saturday afternoon till I got her at 2.45pm Sunday but I was that pleased to see her I was jumping up and down like an eajit and the old heart was pounding and I was that pleased to see her I tanned a bottle of Bucky in less than 5 mins tae calm me doom lol .I'll be back At the gold cup next year with a bit of luck and I hope I get another buzz out of it againThats the stuff Alan

lanarkshire lad Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 Steven it is the same in my club out of a membership of 20 lofts only 4 sent to the gold cup and i think the year before it was 3 seems they are happy with club/fed racing to me it is the derby/grand national of pigeon racing but each to there own i guessIts the same in my club only a few go to it, pity as there are some real good fanciers among them but seem to be happy with fed racing.

lightning fast Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 Dear, dear. I must be from a different era, and I am only 39!!!!!. Would you not aspire to get a doo frae 500 mile?12 members and only two or three would like tae get a timer frae 500 mile!!!!Unbelievable!!!!! Yea thats why I sent 5 last year and if i had them, I would send this year again, and im 39 and the youngest in my club so even the older guys wont send over the water, and its the same storey in most clubs, its mabe different down were you are but up here in the central belt you will be lucky to get 1-3 members in most clubs sending over the water, some clubs may have a lot , but not in my area and iv heard all the storys about days gone by thats all people kept birds just for rennes, but racing has changed even since i started, people cant bild a team of birds for the channel these days down to bop or bad inland racing or something else its only going to be a team of people who will and can do this, i cant even talk most club member to complete young bird racing
knoxjn Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 i wrote to the snfc in the nineties asking foe the national to get into the clubs and get guys to join even as far as adverts on the various local radio stations as at that time june paton who was a fantastic secretary was in the process of putting the national finances on a level never seen before i badgered any one who wasnt a member to join and managed to get a few but as usual didnt even get a reply from the national dont know if it would have worked but just look at th publicity the rspb do nd the money involved with them
Guest IB Posted October 29, 2011 Report Posted October 29, 2011 I'm thinking back to my first club in the 1960's and can say only 1 member flew the channel races (Alec Brown, no relation) . Think we had around 18 members then. Today, in my present club, it's 3/4 members out of 24. So from that and the other comments above, safe to say that the large majority have always been happy to fly club & fed. Which brings us back to the Inland nationals. Appears they are the only attraction for the large majority that are happy to fly club & fed., so we should not even be thinking about getting rid of them, given they attract 5000+ birdages. Whether we distance fliyers like it or not, these races offer the majority the type of flying they want, but there is a stepping stone from them into channel racing: Ypres and then Clermont. Especially if more Feds and Combines went to Ypres or Clermont as there channel race. I certainly tried these races before the Gold Cup. I'd call them a learning curve, for fancier & bird..
