andy Burgess Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 does the same instructions work for old hens too ?? increased fertility ? noted a few replies to this but over 125 views ? is it a more common problem or ?
walterbmasson Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 andy if the hen lays a nice egg i always blame the cockif clear
OLDYELLOW Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 does the same instructions work for old hens too ?? increased fertility ? noted a few replies to this but over 125 views ? is it a more common problem or ?normally fat stops hens from laying but they only ever have so many eggs before they become infertile and after that there's nothing you can do to get to lay as there's none left So if you have good breeding hens split them after your done with them
andy Burgess Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 andy if the hen lays a nice egg i always blame the cockif cleardoes that still apply if the hen was elderly and the cock a good bit younger ??
walterbmasson Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 does that still apply if the hen was elderly and the cock a good bit younger ?? yes andy
jimmy_bulger Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 dave got a old cock here he filled 2 out 10 in 2010 put him in 8x4 section on his own with hen this year he filled 7 out of 10.trimmed him and his hen round the vents .hes in fine fettle even now and if he gets through the winter i expect him to fill 1 or 2 next year as he is in his own section he does not have to compete or get bullied by younger cocks.he is a 1994 bred bird.hope this is of some use to you just be patient with him in his own section he might miss 1 round or 2 but then he might fill the next couple rounds with a bit of sun on his back.
Dave barrie Posted October 22, 2011 Author Report Posted October 22, 2011 thanks for the reply jimmy, yours and all the other replys have given me a lot of food for thought, excellant response to an age old problem. thanks again lads, dave.
Henrik Posted October 22, 2011 Report Posted October 22, 2011 As well as trimming round the vent, cut an inch off his tail too.

johnnyksspeedshop Posted November 22, 2011 Report Posted November 22, 2011 I was at an auction/seminar this weekend, and the speaker Rick told a story of a Chinese breeder whose business was buying good(expensive) birds from around the world and bred them and sold the young. Well, some of the older birds were not fertilizing, so he had absolutely no use for them and would let them free. So Rick asked him why he was releasing birds he spent a fortune on, and he said that while many of them flew away and did not return, some of the ones who stick around became fertile again after exercising and being free. Just a story I heard and thought it was interesting.

Just a story I heard and thought it was interesting.I hate keeping prisoners so my stock birds now have access to an aviary and the differance the aviary makes is visible in the birds. The story about the chinese man i could believe exercising and blood flow i wish i had the spare cash to find out..
