just ask me Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 No kill here JAM Happened a few years back, was calling OBs in, saw that some were still out so came outside to see where they were - was nothing on roof, then when I looked towards the end of loft I saw an adult female sparrowhawk sitting on top of a yearling hen in the garden. Hen was on it's side and, I thought, dead. Stood frozen for a millisecond then took a step toward them and sparrowhawk flew off. Then the pigeon got up and flew off behind it. Got the 5 birds in shortly after that, but the whole business left me well shaken-up. Nothing like that has happened since. sometimes they will come back looking for there wounded bird i have often waited on them

Guest IB Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Yes they do come back for their kill,be prepared to wait a while but you will be rewarded. I know what you are saying, but my first thought at the time was to make sure none of that kind ever got to put my garden onto their food map. I was criticised at the time on here for my second thought - I was livid that the pigeon got nipped in the first place, it had been on the roof ridge with its mate and its lack of awareness of what was going on around it - and failure to come in when called - put the rest of my birds in danger of getting on that map. When my birds are out I want them streetwise, watching and listening to what is going on. I know when there is something on the prowl, from the way the wild birds act , if I am able to read the signs, so should they. JMO. I also stripped out almost everything that grew above ground level that could hide a hawk's approach. I've had no bother since. (touching wood )
Guest lambrechts31 Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 find it hard to believe anybody on here would criticise you for doing anything to protect your pigeons, what about farmers being able to shot anything worrying his stock sheep are hardly an endangered species, not that im against that, but im just realising the cost of some pigeons, that are plucked out the sky and suffer a horrible death like that poor dove in the message posted earlier, all the best m8 :emoticon-0137-clapping:
