Guest homestead Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 i turned the tv on on to get the weather result to see 30 red kites being released.... 30 red kites.. possible 15 pairs.. 1 to 4 eggs per nest.. average 2 young.. x 3 years ??? Nest building in March 2-4 weeks for 1st egg 31-35 days to hatch just in time when we start training and 1st races i lost 2 more young last week found in next doors garden just a mass of feathers is it time to start breeding budgies or crown green bowling and save my money
Novice Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 Didn't think Red Kites were a problem as far as pigeons are concerned. However they do attack school children in the street attempting to rob them of whatever they are eating at the time.
frank-123 Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 Don't think they are fast enough to catch a pigeon Quite like a kestrel in it's hunting habits going for mice, rabbits or any bird lying around dead or injured it is a scavenger Just wonder what the peregrine would do with it coming into it's territory
OLDYELLOW Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 kites are scavengers and eat mainly road kill or remains of bop kills they can smell the decaying carcasses so no threat to pigeons until there already dead , If you want something to attract hawks to your garden a small aviary of Canary's , these attract them , there like sirens to the bops especially if have a few mules amongst them then just place pecking post in front so you can get a great few of these marvellous creatures
just ask me Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 the next big release program will be the the goshawk one then pigeon racing will be finished
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 4 young sparrowhawks have decided to nest in the trees just behind my garden (less than 10 yards from my loft) One squeals all day and night - how the hell it expects to eat when it frightens everything off I don't know. They haven't noticed my loft yet ........

kev01293 Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 tooshy boys right, get em sorted b4 youve got more than 4 to worry about and then you wont even be able to excercise your birds, they probably know exactly where your birds are and are just waiting for the ,snack bar, to open,if they are making a racket its gotta be unsettling your birds, hope you get it sorted for your sake and your birds good luck, kev
greenlands Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I know they don't take pigeons or so I have been told, BUT if they are eating what other BOP eat the other BOP are going to look elsewhere, like in your back garden or allotment. http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/n.....39?referrerPath=news Lindsay
THE FIFER Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I think they eat what BOP leave lying about, like the crows, although the crows can get the pigeons themselves,(carrion crows)
Guest IB Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I think they may then become the prey, Lindsay. I think BoP are territorial and will either kill or drive out others from their own patch.
