Was stuffin the chicken at the kitchen window (no pun) this afternoon when a sparrowhawk nailed a starling right by the loft.. thankfully that's a rare occurance up here ..I cant understand why we have so little in the way of BoP here, there are stacks of starlings and small birds not to mention rabbits. Having witnessed the clinical efficiency of the kill I can appreciate evryone's concerns.. You would think that the RSPB members would spare a thought for all those songbirds, arnt the populations of songbirds dropping?

did anyone else see the news item about the rare dove in a rspb members garden?.....charging 10 pounds/time to see it from his kitchen.....raised 5k for rspb :emoticon-0179-headbang: ....i was hoping a hawk might eat it in front of them...mind you they'd probably love it :emoticon-0179-headbang: and its a bit unfair on the poor 'dove' :cry-blow:

lost first one of the year last week....neighbour found it and was surprised a hawk had done it....i explained / showed in graphic detail how the hawk ate the head/neck first while bird is still alive...and often leaves the rest. we need to watch out 'til april as winter migrants leave before summer ones arrive. mates that have hawk problems reckon amber lights are good....how you live with percy though is beyond me.

for the record i'm not anti rspb but they have to stop blaming others for declining songbird populations and either accept it or take responsibility for their role in the decline.

we as pigeon fanciers have a responsibility as well. not to breed /cull birds for the sake of it.....my own losses equate to about a quarter of my total birds annually roughly split as follows 50% hawk,24% race,24%cull,2% mortality

we should have nothing to hide....pigeon fanciers, gamekeepers, farmers etc are blamed for persecuting hawks often on 'annecdotal' evidence. using the same methodolgy we can blame rspb for persecuting songbirds

im not saying we have anything to hide but sometimes in the heat of the moment members may put statements up that would better for there point of view and the forums if not seen ;)

just a little more thought on the wording and it may stay up but i fully understand how everyones feels noting worse than seeing our birds being ripped out of the sky :emoticon-0179-headbang:

had our hens out today for a couple of hours they had settled on the roof of the loft next thing there up they must have seen it from about 60/70 yards away

then right over the top of the loft a beautiful big sparrow hawk didnt go for the birds this time but just a matter of time she was just letting them know she was there.

Fifer, Sapper, etc. Can you not find a way of safeguarding the members only part of the site? Something like barring anyone who can' produce their loft number and list of their rings for this year? Any doubts just phone their Fed for conformation of the information.

You don't honestly think that the RSPB members will reveal themselves do you? They already know what we think of them but they are so brainwashed into the Organisation's crazy ideas that they will carry on with it regardless of what we, or anybody else for that matter, thinks. They truly believe that Nature will find it's own level and therefore a balance will automatically come about. I think it could be a possibility if there were no racing pigeons, street pigeons and artificially reared birds such as pheasants and domestic poultry. Of course we would need to cut road kill out to prevent it being a food source. Then there are the high speed trains that leave dead birds lying about ready to be eaten, they will have to be controlled to a very much slower speed. People who currently feed the garden birds will have to be told to stop because that is causing an unnatural affect on the populations. Street lights must be switched off because we now know that if allows the Peregrines to hunt after dark and that it affect the breeding cycle of the garden birds. We must all have heard the robins singing in the dead of winter when they should be enjoying the rest from family duties. Then there is the hoary subject of introduced species. Why Goshawks and Kites but not Eagle Owls? Why Cranes that have died out donkeys' years ago but not the Eagle Owls that are trying to recreate a foothold here, and would do if they were allowed to do so by the RSPB bullies. Who was it that thought it a good idea to have White Tailed Eagles loose after hundreds and hundreds of years of their absence? Didn't they know that they ate lambs? Not even small weak lambs, but big lusty lambs that are just swooped on and carted off. Perhaps it is news to these keen Twitchers that the female hawks and falcons must of necessity fatten up before they can breed properly each Spring. For them, it better to target prey of a decent size and birds like the Cuckoo, Dove, Plover and Woodcock are ideal candidates for these killing machines. And of course if these natural targets are not easily available our pigeons become targets. I don't think I would be quite so annoyed about all this if we were dealing with sensible people who would actually see what the rest of us can see so very easily. Unfortunately for us, they have huge sums of money to support their lies and to promote their idiot ideas were as we are lacking in motivation and money to fight back. Are we the last of the dinosaurs.

not such a good idea for people like myself who are just starting back up having been away from the sport for a few years who has no club this season kicked off PB because they have no loft number as yet and i certainly wont join a club this season just to waste money because i wont be racing this coming season. so if that was the case ill be seeing you all in 2012 :crying:

There are others who don't have any pigeons, so you wouldn't be the only one affected by that suggestion. IMO we are an open forum and have always been able to accommodate people with different views, provided those views are reasonable and put to other members in a reasonable way.

bought my grandson a nice little tumbler hen at blackpool, had it out only a couple of days then the local sparrowhawk nailed it, he couldn,t believe what it had done to it.

i agree if we just tell it how it is those trawling for the rspb must start to get an idea how the over protection of hawks is affecting bird populations. actually i doubt that rspb members do much 'trawling' not least because you'd have to be a serious hawk loving nerd to do it.

Dead right, if you look on their site you wont see much mention of hawks, it's all about protecting the birds, but they don't say from what, I think Joe public sees little of hawks, unlike us, because we have what attracts them, so the public don't realise there is a problem
