Guest Hjaltland Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 my race team always picked their own partners i found they tried harder to get home stock birds were paired by me So how do you handle this.. is it a case of just opening the doors and let battle commence or do you control the pairing process ? I've always tried to select the pairings to maintain a line or 'best to best' The older birds I generally leave in their previous pairings unless there is good reason to change.. I have found that my pigeons have long memories and will want to go back to previously used nest boxes even after being split up over winter

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 Does anyone see ay benifits of letting the birds pair up themselves?? Or does anyone do this Theres pros and cons with it. I picked the stock pairings this year for the reason I'm trying to find out as much as possible about a young stock team. The racers are doing their own thing. For me its a more settled, happier race team-a lot less fighting and upheaval. You obviously won't get exactly what you want pairings wise but are there really many/any that walk amongst us who possess such gifted matching skills???
Guest IB Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 If you let the birds pair themselves, those that were pairs last year will pair again - pigeons do pair for life. Those that I intend to breed from I will always choose their partner, as I change my breeding pairs every year. Cocks are in their own box, it's the hen that has to be settled, that usually doesn't take long, just a matter of making sure her old box is closed during the settling stage. This year my yearlings (apart from 2) will choose their own mate. After the breeders are locked in their boxes, I'll open all the section doors - then stand back.

Guest stb- Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 stock birds are paired although a lot of pairs that a breeding good birds will just go together year after year so makesit simples racers can do what they like as have no interest in y birds from them but they do rear the first round from my stock birds

I sometimes have two different matings in the same season( wean ybs then repair to diffo hen/cock) [)
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 I sometimes have two different matings in the same season( wean ybs then repair to diffo hen/cock) [) Done this with the stock doos before. Its a good way of testing your new stock and finding out a bit quicker which ones are the breeders and which one are the feeders.
