With tomorrow being St Valentines day, I have heard some National flyers say they pair up on this day, and others say they don,t pair their National candidates until around the 11th of March.

So for those PB members who are planning to send birds to the Nationals, when do you pair up?

And why do you prefer this date?

This will be my third attempt at flying the programme. Based on negative experiences with young birds when parents are paired mid-March and Late February, and my National Results from these dates, I intend to pair up on the full moon nearest Feb 14th. This year that's 18th, this Friday, and I've geared the birds towards that - they are more than ready.

March pairing is moult related. I was told that the channel candidates are best sent on their 1st Primary. Last year I sent mine further on in the moult, by the last race Clermont, they were on 4th & 5th primary, I found my results improved on year before, and as I want to improve year on year, slight changes toward better management seems in order.

On YB front, with late March pairing, my 09 YB team were not ready for the racing and I basically lost them all - first time I've ever done that. I've 2 x 09 birds left, one a late bred. 2010's 1st round were involved in a flyaway - first time I've ever had that (6 didn't come back) - and 2nd round weren't ready for racing so they didn't go, they were very lightly trained instead. The 1st round had fallen to bits in the moult by 4th YB race and were stopped. Normally I would have my 2nd round to carry me through, so I didn't complete Fed or SNFC YB programmes. So I've 8 birds raced to 90 miles, 8 trained to 20 miles, and 4 untrained latebreds. No way can that be said to be a good end to YB season. Something needs changed and for me its getting back to a proper balance between the race & breeding seasons.

i call myself a novice at channel racing even though i have kept birds a long time . does it really matter when they are paired up we paired up the widow team in dec and last year sent two to clermont on there 4 th flight and got both of them in the early morning flying 552 .Do we look into this pairing up late to much or am i just lucky

paired friday rear 1 round split away then roundabout to eastbourne then pair for channel

i'm along these lines also didn't do me any harm season 2010 competed in every national race except the longest one picking up 4 national diplomas, ypres was my worst race where it was the only national race i never timed in so will have to rethink this one in 2011,i personally think that a pigeon is not at it's best untill that 1st flight is chipped but on it's 4th /5th it's past it's best
