Delboy Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Just trained my ybs and they passed me just about a mile from home, as I drove in I noticed they weren't there. They had landed on a tenement building 3 streets away. I had to drive round and chase them up, what can I do to stop them doing this again I get terrible bother with trapping, I think its the cats
john cumming Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 i had the same problem for a short time but what i did was miss a feed out and cut the rashens back that will soon sort the problem out, i have no probs now they are climbing over one another to get in , food is the key??
Guest mick bowler Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 You need to get control of your birds!
BLUERON Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 food is the key mate.had same thing but once i sorted the food out they know now any messing no food for that night.take time but once they land on to loft roof all worth it
JohnQuinn Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 The only "weapon" you have is the feed tin, when they come in only give them half rations today. Toss them tomorrow and you'll see a difference. If they still mess about, same again tomorrow and so on 'til they come straight to the loft. Don't listen to anyone telling you no to starve them, its the quickest method available to you and it won't do them any harm
Guest bakes Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 food tin cut food down what plays up and dont come in when you wont them in misses there food only way your boss not them atb

Delboy Posted July 20, 2010 Author Report Posted July 20, 2010 I know the script regards feeding but this isnt the reason for what happened today. Im not a novice and ive won more 1st prizes with ybs than anybody in my area so , the feeding thing isnt the issue. Something spooking the birds as they are shying from loft .

Roland Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Not quite the same granted, and you in this case should perseverve as some have stated above. A bit different I know, but similar, is that I have some youngsters that went up to the old Cinema when first up and away to fly. I lose out some every year nowin this way as there are 100's of them. Now across the back of me, about 8 houses down, I see about 10 or so settled. I see them nigh every night for about an hour or so, then they are away. where to? who knows and I gave up caring. Yes I have forgotten them. I know - whether a fact or not, that if and when they ever return, 98% are never any good. They settle out first time a little hard. Work back at leisure. even after They have been rehoused and bred from. They know how to look after themselves and lack that 'Love of Home'. So you can never motivate them for starters. Hence I am saving on good feed. No I'm not saying that they are any good, or were culls, just that they will never be any other than that now. They preferred the Pictures place more than home and as such are 'Lost of the Top' and for the one in a 100 that might be good, of a wind blown home day just the odd time, they aren't what I want to send, for to pay money out one must have confidence in the birds... especially as feeding a bad one is just as expensive as feeding a good one!
Wiley Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 normally see this with fanciers who try chasing there young birds and forcing them to fly in the past.

Aye i know if i come home and the doos are on the house roof or the neighbours house roof somethings scared them ie. cat or hawk. when the hawk was going through them during kamikaze season they'd land on the house roof which is a good 50m from the loft to sit for a good while to check it wasn't about before entering the loft.the hawk used to sit in the trees behind the dookit and wait for them coming out the bowl.I even seen it sitting on the roof of the loft directly above the stall trap once.
Delboy Posted July 20, 2010 Author Report Posted July 20, 2010 Delyou know its cats , time you sorted it Your right Bob, it has to be sorted , now.Mind ye, I think every second hoose round here has a cat or two. Its a bast... when it happens m8, isnt it. Cheers
JohnQuinn Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 I disagree with the view that something has frightened them to the extent that they are landing on roofs to avoid the loft. The Hawk has hit mine twice this year and after 40/50 mins they returned to the loft. The 2nd time it pinned one of them but i was right there and it bolted, the fox is visiting regular because i can smell it in this damp weather and i stung a Tam cat way the .22 about a week ago when it was sitting looking in at ma Yb's.They don't play up every time i let them out, they fly, land on the loft, and pick around the garden for a few minutes before i shout them in. Its bad management that has caused this and only good management will sort it, JM(STRONG)O!!
Guest Owen Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 You know that you will not be able to race birds behaving like that. You need to sort the cat problem, if that is what it is. I use an electric fencer. You must have known about this before today and now time is short to deal with the problem. Your birds have to be retrained to trap and from what you say you will know how to do that. I doubt if you can afford to train those birds without someone being at the home end to see that they trap in safety. To me allowing birds to go onto roofs is the worst kind of slackness. I would love it if my fellow club members would do that because, if they did, I would win most of the races. Lovely, come to Daddy.

kirky cowboy Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 hi delboy just read about your trouble.i think there might be a couple of experts on here will tell you how to deal with it.but stick in there son you,ll learn.

Roland Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Hawks When falcon / etc. are used to frighten of pigeons, they hop it 2 - 300 yards and quickly return. Saw the program of T.V. where in the end hawks only managed to scare them 30 yards and back they came. like a mouse fed live to a snake in the cage that is not hungry... it loses it's fear and will eventually climb on the snakes back of the head and kill the snake. like a cat trapped in a loft that can't get out... they soon take no notice. When I have had cats on my loft - before the electric fence of course, they only flew upto my roof top... and stay out over night sometimes as they went to land and then go back up. An interesting scenario, and very true, many places seem to have an affinity with pigeons. No matter how many times certain places are ceansed, like an old folks home and some adjoining houses, every so often strays come and settle there. Often wished I lived there as it certainly draws them Not looking at Churches and old picture places, but ordinary house tops.
geordie1234 Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 SEE CUTTING BACK THERE FEED WILL IT ACTUALLY MAKE THE LAND ON THE LOFT FROM FLIGHT OR WILL THEY NOT JUST GO TO THE ROOF THEN STRAIGHT DOWN ??
JohnQuinn Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 SEE CUTTING BACK THERE FEED WILL IT ACTUALLY MAKE THE LAND ON THE LOFT FROM FLIGHT OR WILL THEY NOT JUST GO TO THE ROOF THEN STRAIGHT DOWN ?? In time they are Conditioned into landing where the best source of food is, they won't even look at the roofs. Rattle the pea can when they return HUNGRY and they'll drop onto the loft.
