FoxesFan4Ever Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 Hi all, I am going to run electricity to the loft from the house. All the local hardware stores however refuse to give me any advice because it is against the health and safety rules. (How stupid is that?) Anyway I would think that 2.5mm Twin and Thread would be sufficient for my needs with a Surge breaker of course but I would like some concrete advice before going ahead. I will eventually be looking to run ETS, music, lights, a laptop and possibly a heat source. It is highly unlikely that I would run them all together but I should be looking to be geared up for that eventuality. Thanks all
Guest mick bowler Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 I am a spark by trade and what the shop guy said is right. All electrical work in UK is now covered by the building regs "Part P", basically states that anyone doing work on your property needs to be part P qualified or has to be inspected by building control. If you dont and something goes wrong, you are liable and not your insurer. Call in a pro, i wont advise, (as much as i would like to), as little knowledge is worse than none!
Guest stevie-b Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 there are plenty guys not working looking for a couple o pound ask about m8 u will get a tradesman for decent money

Guest IB Posted March 14, 2010 Report Posted March 14, 2010 I've taken a number of posts off, as has another mod before me. Any posts which offer a layperson advice on how to install electrical work have been shown by two qualified electricians to be both dangerous and illegal. Yet these laypersons persist in their dangerous and illegal advice, and if it continues, thread will be locked.

A bit frustrating I know but if he or some else gave advice then you thought OH this is what he meant then it's goodnight and then how will they feel when being on the site . So comon lads give them a bit of respect and try to understand where they are coming from.

I cannot take out the original post and leave in all the ones that replied to it, irrespective of whether they corrected it or not.

You really need to have at least a good basic understanding of house electrics to caary out ANY work, and just because its a shed dont make it any less important. This is a true story. I had a bloke ring asking for an additional socket in a bedroom he was using as an office. I never really had time, but as he was a bit of a handyman i ran him thru what to do and how to do, including cable sizes etc. Anyway some weeks later, he rang and asked could i install some smoke alarms, again i was so busy i couldnt and it turned out they were only the battery type anyway. Another couple of weeks and a call from his wife. The smoke alarm upstairs kept going off, and there was an "unusual smell". My alarm bells started to ring so called into them soon as i could. Far from what i had told him, he had infact purchased small flex, as used in standard lamps from b&q, and ran it underneath the carpet and not the floorboards. The socket it ran to, had a fax, a PC and a small fan heater running from it! The smell was also putrid. When i lifted the carpet the foam backing of the carpet had melted into the cable and onto the floor boards, and id say another few days and house would been on fire, the smoke alarm was picking up the fumes. What was the most disturbing was that these appliances were left on all night, and as i explained to her it was just sheer luck he had fitted them detetctors, otherwise who knows what had happened. Like i said a little knowledge..........
