I know just how she feels. I've had to bring my one and only remaining garden fantail into the loft. Do you still have them out in the dovecote?

Only two pairs left in the dovecotes Sue and the males spend the night in the old loft, I will see how she feels but she is definitely getting tired of it all as it has been a bad year for hawk attacks as well, her fancy birds ain't been out this year at all

Crows are usually opportunists, they go for the sick, injured or vulnerable. I have never seen them go for a fit healthy bird, they are too slow, but if you get one injured out of sight they will kill and devour. I had one go missing and found it too late, but i prefer to have them around to BOP.

Roland is not quite right about crow being on the BOP menu. They are, but they way down the list, they are too much nuisance for BOP, especially sparrowhawks, and crows will put up a show "en-force" to drive them out the area. I have seen them here harassing a Peregrine, with enough space to make an escape if needed. These BOP use stealth in their attacks, and not much around when its being harassed by noisy crows!

I'd say either your bird was downed by a BOP 9would like to see pic of its back)or injured itself before the crow attacked. Easily got rid of if they become a nuisance, no guns no traps needed!

not so mick I had them and saw them take old birds out of the sky, they are very quick when they want to, and they surprise the pigeons, blackbirds and starlings are fast but the crows get them as well,

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS BEING THE BIRDS DONT LOOK AT IT AS BEING A THREAT

TO THEM AND ARE VERY TOLERANTE TO CROWS .

Have to say my tolerance levels for anything that wishes to disturb ma does is minimal!! I relocate everything, and i mean everything, 4 legged, furry, flying or scurrying, no time wasting or second thoughts they gotta go

SAME HEAR JOHN, I HAD A CARRION I MY LOFT, IT WAS GURRING A SQUAB IT PULLED OUT THE NEST BOX. SO IT GOT THE MESSAGE.

Well one can think what they like. As regards crows, they are very crafty, alert and opertunists, and not only scavengers, but killers. They - like all the family - root out and distroy the hedgerows, trees etc. To think otherwise is foolhardy and done at your own peril.

Mind if food ever gets scare that they are short thrift of via the Hawk etc.

However a hens' egg injected via a syringe with a tad of flavouring works wonders.

Sorry to hear about your bird being killed.

My experience with crows has been mixed - Fifer was first I remember warning that they were a danger to pigeons, but at that time I considered them a help in keeping sparrowhawks & buzzards away - they still buzz them to this day in my area.

First bother & casualty I had was 3/4 years back, a youngster on its 10th flight got into bother and was grounded under trees about 2 miles from me. Member of public attracted by commotion crows were making rescued the youngster, and handed it in to a clubmate who got it back to me - minus most of primaries in both wings. Eating & drinking OK it couldn't keep food down and a few weeks later found it had died during the night.

Worst experience was 2 years ago during OB season when one crow went mental and kept attacking my OBs as soon as they landed on the loft. A clubmate tried to nail it, then lent me his rifle and tried myself - close, not close enough, could see the swine sat on lamp post 'ducking' as it heard pellets whizz by, (it's a Gatlin gun with laser sights I need) and it eventually disappeared all by itself - it was attacking other birds so maybes met more than a match.

Birds were terrified of crows after that, they took off as soon as they saw one coming their way. Took ages but they are now more 'streetwise' and treat crows like any other threat, they watch them closely, but they rarely take off nowadays.

So my feelings are still mixed, I know they are a danger and none get to sit around my place, like magpies, they are chased, but the crows still keep the hawks away.

When we were kids the family spent the summers on a local farm where the owner had doos. I can still visualise the Crows hanging from the trees by the lofts, my dad caught 2 of them IN THE LOFT eating young birds from the nests, done them in and hung them up to deter others. Thats 30 odd years i've known they'll kill and eat young birds.

Did anyone see spring watch where the Carrion took the swan cygnet?

I "had" one or two getting a bit close for comfort, didnt really want them coming on the loft and scaring the YBs, but happy for them to be around still.
