philb Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 What iron tonics or tonics generally do people use, or recommend Phil
jimmy white Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 johnsons pigeon tonic, full of iron,if you must give them it?? in my opinion ,do not go for the old idea of putting a rusty nail in the water, it can only be full of bacteria and in fact poison the birds.
andy Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 JOHNSONS TONIC EVERY MONDAY DURING RACING....
GROVEHOMER Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 YEAH, JOHNSONS TONIC HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME.
GROVEHOMER Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 I KNOW OF A STUD FARM THAT HAS NETTLES GROWING THROUGH ITS AVIARY GRILLED FLOOR, AFTER WATCHING THE OWNERS BIRDS READILY EATING THEM,I ASKED IF THE BIRDS CAME TO ANY HARM, APPARENTLY HIS BIRDS LOVED THEM. I KNOW NETTLES ARE NUTRITIOUS. NOW I HAVE NETTLES GROWING THROUGH MY AVIARY FLOOR (THEY ONLY REALLY GROW IN SPRING, SUMMER AND INTO THE EARLY AUTUMN MONTHS).

Guest Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 Think we are all 'guilty' of a belief in different tonics. They have uses ranging from pick-me-up to maintenance of health & in humans anyway, a feeling of well-being e.g. tonic wine, tho you can overdo it, e.g. Buckfast is a tonic wine. Have never used Johnsons on pigeons, but in my time have used : 'viola tricolor' brew, tea; garlic, cider vinegar, honey, and most recently, echinacea and elderberry. I think they all have a role to play in maintenance of pigeon health, and tea and honey are also pick-me-ups.
bewted Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 viola tricolor probably one of the best, but, can you still get it bruno ?
THE PRIEST Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 Used to give the birds a head of lettuce was told by a old fancier years ago that this contained iron.
Fair Play Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 Ask Jim George (Round O) or Bernie Bennett of the BHW, they have advocated it's use for years (V.T.). If anyone knows where to get it they will,Jim used to give all the details for a small donation to the local hospital (Ninewells I think)

Guest Posted January 3, 2008 Report Posted January 3, 2008 Used to give the birds a head of lettuce was told by a old fancier years ago that this contained iron. Fed the birds two midget gem lettuces a week, they really enjoyed them, making short work of the leafy parts. You are right about 'greens' and iron.
