REDCHEQHEN Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 what do you think about the french races we are racing from Clermont this weekend ? I somehow don't think they will let us into france !!! AI UPDATE The following is an extract from the Federation Colombophile Francaise (FCF) our French counterparts. “I have pleasure in sending you a copy of notification from our Ministry of Agriculture which modifies the directives of 20 July 2007 and 24 January 2008. This is signed by the ministers for Agriculture and Ecology. In future pigeons from EU countries will be allowed to compete from France in the event of an outbreak of AI in their home country provided that any such outbreak is confined to a single ecological unit. This brings them into line with the situation in France and is of course dependent on any directives in operation in their home country. We believe that this decision by AFSAA (the agency that looks into diseases) is very positive for the pigeon sport and we hope will go some way towards keeping the sport alive. Their advice is that the epidemiological role played by pigeons in the spread of AI is minimal and that pigeons racing under the above conditions pose a level of risk that is nil or negligible. This is an extraordinary advance which has been made possible by the FCI lobbying of the EU. We suggest that this should be published in your weekly journal.” The following is an extract from a letter from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. “We have been asked to review the position of racing pigeons with regards to AI following a request from Afssa. On 30th April Afssa came to the conclusion that a relaxation of the directives covering racing pigeons was preferable given the low risks they posed. This information can be seen on their website www.afssa.fr The Committee discussed this advice in May and can now issue a new directive as from June 2008. Low level risk assessment category had now been changed to: No participation by international pigeons from countries affected by more than one outbreak of AI. No participation by international pigeons in races which depart from or fly over countries where there is more than one outbreak of AI. Participation by international pigeons from countries affected by a single outbreak of AI are authorised with the exception of pigeons from the infected zone. Participation by international pigeons in races that depart from or fly over countries where there is a single outbreak of AI will be permitted with the exception of pigeons from the infected zone.” The General Manager writes: this is positive news from the French Government in that they will not necessarily exclude all pigeons from a country with AI. There will be conditions applied. DEFRA has been forwarded this information and, as matter of course in reviewing the Veterinary Risk Assessment, they asked the British Embassy in Paris to clarify the situation with the French Ministry. They became aware that an announcement was to be made by the French Ministry. We continue to push DEFRA for the revised Veterinary Risk Assessment which is taking longer than we expected. Peter Bryant General Manager
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 :) :)A little bit of positive news within that post but still the threat is there of getting banned. :-/ :-/
Roland Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 lets be sensible boys dont go off the deep end just yet Very true ... and sensible, but then when has, let alone does, is the Fancy up in arms, letting off steam and storm marching 10 Downing street etc. ... Not a cheap... (Just a deliberate pun Nowt a word... so doubt there will be any sqawking now ... again. Yes or course we should be, the French must laugh at us, thinking what a load of ole twaddlers we must be! Yes hate to say it, but they put us to shame!
Guest chrisss Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 lets be sensible boys dont go off the deep end just yet oh happy days with defra, going power crazy [again] hope for the best, plan for the worst
Guest Vic Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 With Peter Bryants recent update, we may sneak across this week, until (I hope not) all hell breaks loose!
Roland Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 We only have ourselves to blame... Golly we haven't even got the balls to satnd up, let alone be counted! Apathy Merlin is the killer in this sport... not the jealousy, Apathy and the bigots that clamour to and hold ofice just cow pow to their 'Cliche' and easily led sheep. Time they did something else, instead of saying 'What ... fnciers are just jealous... instead of saying like 'Right this week - end, those that can't race meet us up at 10Downing and with placards lets stop the traffic! Daren't suggest 'and nuts to Dafra, we are going full steam ahead'! And if any one thinks that words are ever going to get the better of 'Politiacians' then they have something seriously wrong with them. Only two ythings matter 'Lining their own nests AND the NEXT vote! Yes they all want a 'Band Wagon' to ride, especially when not in office!
Guest IB Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 lets be sensible boys dont go off the deep end just yet I agree with you. Stick to what we know: One outbreak. Everyone unlucky enough to be caught within the 10km Zone has their birds grounded for 30 days. Outside the Zone, life for the moment continues .... As Redcheqhen correctly pointed out, French authorities have already given us the green light, subject to common sense restrictions - no birds from the Zone to go there, and they are of course already grounded. Still to find out if this is a High or Low Pathogenic strain of H7. If its High, things won't get any worse, if its Low, I think the Zone and time both reduce.

madmaxlofts Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 it will be the french who ban us as they did last yr guess most will be turning north next year if they ban us again it cant go on like this again 200 milers is no good for the distance man i think some will call it a day especially with the corn going through the roof this is anough to finish some off i think
Guest IB Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Time barred and missed from my last post:- 2006: The Avian Influenza and Influenza of Avian Origin in Mammals (England) Order 2006 enacted following the Dereham poultry farm AI Incident. 3km & 10km zones and restrictions around Dereham put in place. 28th March 06 : Confirmed as H7N3, a Low (rather than High) Pathogenic strain of AI. Hunt for source of the infection and 'contacts' continues. An LPAI restricted zone was then introduced, 1km radius of infected farm Order put restrictions on captive birds and 'bird gatherings' within the Zone.

We went to France with birds, there was an outbreak there just as transporters got on French soil, and DEFRA refused to allow the birds to fly back to the UK.
