Guest Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 way too early, whats the point, maybe have a good opening race then they just fade away.
Guest Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Its to cold for training not even paired up yet.
Guest Paulo Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 bit early i would think I'll prob start with a few 12 milers at the beginning of march and then build up so they are ready for the first race in april
OLDYELLOW Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 id agree to cold too early be knocked back before season starts
Guest Paulo Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 I think April is too early lol Is really with the weather and that but our first race is first weekend in april so your knackered really. I wouldn't like to send my bird to even a fairly easy race like wakefield which is around 80 miles to us without them having had at least a few 25 mile chucks. I remember Frank Tasker coming on here once and saying you should only train when the shallows fly etc. he had a good point but realitys a different thing up here when ya first race is in april. You just have to pick your training days and don't take silly risks. It was snowing and freezing this morning so wouldn't have taken mine but it seems to be warming up a bit outside and is clear and sunny and the wind has died down so would take them now.
Roland Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 I think April is too early lol Personally Think 2nd week in May... usually start end of April and miss the first 2 -3 races. Added bonuses are that a cold wind, especially any East in it doesn't allow me to ruin or lose a good bird. Not tempted to try and win 'Averages' ... a boon to a lot of Losses. And plenty time to bring the birds in for the distances. - Mind some so called Nationals are starting earlier and earlier try to geta step up on their competiters ...
The Navigator Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Off their heads. Lets see what they do in June and July, nowt!!
pjc Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 racing should start mid may and go on until October when often the weathers better but for some reason people want to start every year at the earliest possible date with little concern for the birds especialy yearlings. Phil
Tony C Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 February already sheesh! I had better start letting my birds out.
Smithy Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 racing should start mid may and go on until October when often the weathers better but for some reason people want to start every year at the earliest possible date with little concern for the birds especialy yearlings. Phil I think exactly the same. October sees alot of very good weather nowadays

Guest Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Thats if they are racers. I know few years back in Oxford on the way to work i used to see groups going over, and thought the same. Then one day i was parked up taking a call, and saw this group heading over then suddenly they all dived into a field!! It was all the towners coming out for their breakfast by all accounts!!
