kelly tom Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 I done a talk to two local schools last term the Rpra will supply you with a pack containing books,Leaflets, pens, posters, balloons etc.I took two old birds and a squeaker and a clock prize cards ,rubbers. It was supposed to be part of their history lesson and we talked about the role played by pigeons in World War11 we then got onto racing and pigeons in general.Dont worry about what to say as once you start the kids and teachers will bombard you with questions .My session was supposed to last half an hour and we were still talking after an hour and a half. You will really enjoy it so just relax and be yourself.
The Navigator Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 I did it once as part of my degree and it went down well. Do a powerpoint show showing how it all happens and cover the pigeon hero's from the war as the listeners are very interested in that. Of course have a few birds there for their interest and I am sure they will be happy.
frank-123 Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 i done it two years ago i took two white old birds there young plus eggs teachers were coming from other classes to have a look the kids were thrilled when i asked who wanted to hold the young birds (not flying) i put a cloth under the young incase of any miss haps it was quite nerve rackiing talking pigeons when the class is full but the kids really enjoyed it i wish i had taken a basket full of birds and liberated them given each kid a ring number first bird on my ets would have won a prize but i never thought about it until i left

pjc Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Depending on there ages you could always have a little competition, fastest to clock in etc. Obviously not if there todlers and not removing the rubber from a real pigeon but think of things that will entertain them and retain there attention.
sapper756 Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 The Fifer on this site has done it around our way a few times

jimmy white Posted February 12, 2009 Report Posted February 12, 2009 Maybe have 2-3 write notes and put under the ring and release them-- return the note to the school a few days later. i have did this in the past,, enjoyed it as much as the kids ;D took all the notes back with their signatures , kids just love baby pigeons , white ones etc,, at first frightened to touch the birds,, then when one did it ,,they all did it

Guest bigda Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 for kids that age, i would show them some birds, a clock, and thimbles race rubbers , more on the birds in a cage, older birds that have done shows and are calm, and tell them how they help save the soldiers during the war, and how fast they can travel or how far they have come from
grizzle_hen Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 I've got lots of photos of pigeons from the Blackpool and Dunoon Shows. And I'm going to take either a white or red/brown pigeon, that way its easier for them to differentiate from street pigeons
robbiedoo. Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 i am doing the same in the summer to a school for children less able children . i would recomend ian mackay for some info ill definitly be calling on him for some nearer the time good luck . robbie 8)
Guest Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Gemma, Keep it simple for children of that age, plenty of pictures, even a video they can watch, and a few pigeons in a basket if you can
grizzle_hen Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Gemma, Keep it simple for children of that age, plenty of pictures, even a video they can watch, and a few pigeons in a basket if you can For 5 year olds, you would be surprised at how bright they are. I've been with them since September and everytime they amaze me with what they can do! And they are very attentive, and they have had animals in the class before and loved it! It was only when their teacher mentioned if I have any pets, I thought about pigeons
grizzal Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 some good points mentioned to take with u, good luck gemma
grizzle_hen Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Once I've got the pigeon sorted, I'll have a read through, thank you all :)
THE FIFER Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 yes had a few talks with a primary school, used to liberate white birds each year to open their sports day, also had a white bird take part in a liberation of 50 birds at stafford for her golden jubilee the queen releaed them and before hand the white cock was at school and the local press was there taking photos of the bird with the head teacher and the kids, the children gave it a name "PURDEY" it was sent down to join the other 49 birds from down south, purdey was the only bird from Scotland, and yes he came home and still in the loft now, both the school and myself received a diploma from the queen for taking part, still got photos of my gran son and the head teacher letting purdey go at the school before the liberation of others to open their sports day,

NW USA Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 The best part for the kids is when you let them go...they gasp....oh no! You've lost them!....then you tell them they'll be home before you. They are incredulous.
