pigeonpete Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 well folks, need someone to give me a good kick up the *expletive removed*, it wont change what i have done, but i hope someone can learn from it, this happened on tuesday and im still so mad with myself, o.k here goes, im at work from 5.30 in the morning till 6 at night, so find it really hard to get the time to get the birds as i want them, ( please dont any 1 feel sorry for me) anyway, first week of racing after alot of effort training most nights after work (weather had been okish) was 2nd club which i was chuffed to bits with flying natural, did the same the week after, weather o.k, was 1st 2nd 3rd club and 1st 10th 13th fed, over the moon first time for me on cloud nine. next week weather crap all week, hardly went out of the loft, as raining nearly every night after work. did'nt think it would make much of a difference! anyway was last in the club! did i sulk or what! so this week i thought going to make em have it this week, and the weather been crap! anyway took monday night bit windy and slight rain, training at 18 miles by the way! took 25 birds dropped 1 2 year old hen! just thought it was 1 of those things, heres the killer blow took them tuesday night was as black as the ace of spades, trees were bent double with the wind! took em to my 18 mile point, was still raining but thought that would be no problem! took 24 birds, realased at 7 p.m i got back at 7.30 and look across the pond, (was already thinking what have i done) lashing it down now and wind was very stong! 7.32 had 15 drop, got a further 3 before 9 when it was to dark for me to see and went home! next morning when my wife went down there was 1 waiting to be let in, thats 20 birds now, and by the time i got back last night, there was 3 birds there! all totally ripped apart by the wires, had to stich 1 of them up, kill 1,( which had won for me before) and the other no good for this season! im an utterley disgusted with myself, what i did was cruelty! and all for what winning a club race this weekend! i have learned alot this week. thanks for reading!
PATTY BHOY Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 at least you realised your mistake.we`ve all done some crazy things with our birds.
cemetary Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 As pat says, we have all done crazy things with the birds, you won be doing that again.
Guest Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Pete, we have all been told, do this, do that, don't do this and don't do that, but we are all the same, we never seem to learn until we prove it to ourselves. What is done, is done, and although it is a hard pill to swallow, at least you have learned from your mistake. As people have said to me on here when I had my disaster recently, KEEP YA CHIN UP MATE
Roland Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Well, beat your selve up if you so wish :-/ Many have / do, as I have several times and all has been roses in the garden. Don't think you was out of order at all personally. Gosh seen them released with no chance to home in torential rain.... for the hard distances etc. Fellow says, 'They have to learn to keep going down, dry out and continue to strive home'. Anothet great distance man I know, and a few more, leave them just enough time to home.... Theory 'Will fly out to last light when no other day birds about, these will be' You know what, ALL them scenario's paid / pay handsome dividends for them flyers :-/ Me Morning fog, as long as they get above it, of they go! Etc. etc. Mind I know how sick you feel wit the 'If only ........' split milk syndrome. Good luck.
pjc Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 we've all done it taken birds got to lib site looked at the weather and wondered to lib or not, up they go and on the drive home driven through torential rain etc etc. Have sent birds to the race and never expected to get a lib but they've been chucked up to return home in a thunder storm, some will make it some won't but we've all done it!
Guest Owen Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 We have all done something like that. Both you and your pigeons will survive to fight another day. Best of all you are wiser and will be a better manager in the future. Your story will make a lot of us jealous. I notice that your wife is involved with you. Well done mate. Best of luck to you both.
Guest strapper Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 well the saying is...you dont learn from doing things right! you only learn when you do things wrong! ...so dont worry over it too much and put it down to experience and a lesson learned, although it has cost you with those birds,it could well have been far worst. all the best ...paul
peterpau Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 If you aint done it you're gonna do it sooner or later. Best o' luck mate.

Best of luck to you both. cheers everyone for you support!, and cheers owen, this my fourth year now, and to be honest i wouldnt be able to do much without my wife, 4 years ago she hated them, would not come down to the lofts if they were out, thought they were going to attack her, but gradually got her interested, with the babies etc, she now goes in the lofts and picks up the babies, cleans out for me, feeds and lets them out for me. she even caught 9 old birds a couple of weeks ago, took her about an hour though bless! were getting there slowly. think clare and my son jordan are plotting to fly against me next year!! better watch my back. and yes i have learned from my mistake, there is always next week! cheers once again everyone! still feel a tool though ;-)

Miss Willis Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Thanks for sharing your story. I learned from it.
REDROCKET Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 the heading of your thread say it all (what an idiot) the bit that got me was the trees were bent double, and its pi$$ing down, if i was a doo and you put me up in that i would'nt be coming back even if i could. my birds are trained in reasonable weather from about 10 mile or not at all and we can still do ok against around 1000 birds top 10 1st 3 races, so there's no need to torcher your birds like that no simpathy here im affraid.
NW USA Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Thanks for sharing that Pete. Reminds us of what can happen.
Guest mikkey Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 we've all done something stupid with our birds, every single one of us and we beat ourselves up afterwards. as long as we learn from our mistakes it'll make us wiser.. ;)
fletch Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 the good thing will be if you have learned from it,
Guest Freebird Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 One of my favourite sayings is " the man who never made a mistake, never made anything " What I like about you is your honesty and through this story other people can learn so it has not all been in vain. I also think that the birds who were fortunate enough to make it will have a better chance to deal with bad weather during a race so all is not lost. Who can blame you for being over enthusiastic given the race results. The main thing is you have learnt a BIG lesson and your birds will benefit in the end. Good luck in the future. p.s. get the wife to kick yer *expletive removed* cos she'll enjoy it(evil)
peterpau Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Mate you never know wether it would be any good or not 98% are not, but yes same way bred as 2 nd sec 20th MNFC. Shame, but it happens, I've done similar myself and now they only ever go 10 mile
Blue Chequer Pied Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 You made a mistake, we have all done it. As long as you learn from your mistakes they dont turn into failures. The incident cant be put down as a failure if you learn from it and dont do it again. Paul.
