FoxesFan4Ever Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 Hi all, I had my first rat kill today. I didn't know they could get in but now it seems clear that this is where my birds are getting their injuries and not from cats or hawks as I first thought. Anyhow, as sad as it is at least now I know my enemy and I can fight it head on. I have located the small hole in the floor where I assume it/they got in. I have put a flat tray of rat poison through the hole and covered it with some sheets of metal for now until I am sure bait is going and then I will totally recover floor area with 9mm plywood. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Foxes Never Quit
OLDYELLOW Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 gets some peanut butter and mix with antifreeze and put near enty point under loft
kirky Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 problem is if rats are around thay will chew a new hole in sides of loft or door, best to be rid of them altogether, is your loft off the ground if it is wirer it off, if you no any one with ferritts ask for old bedding and put it under loft or close to edges of loft if at ground leval.
Blue Chequer Pied Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 The smell of ferrets will definately deter them. Find some one that keeps them and when they clean out the hutch get the content and sread it on the ground round the loft. Keep putting down fresh every now and again to keep the scent strong and they will stay away. Paul.
retired Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 When i collected the loft im now using for the Yb's the guy had very serious rat problems - The method he used to try and control them was by meshing the floor - I cant say it helped him a great deal as we are talking 30-40 rats there minimum but i wonder if it would be enough to deter the odd one. If you need ferret bedding i am cleaning mine out tomorrow.
Roland Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 gets some peanut butter and mix with antifreeze and put near enty point under loft With a crumbled digestive biscuit. Leave in a pipes all around.... Rats - like mice seldom if ever pass by a pipe, but venture into it. So Cats, Pigeons etc. are not affected either. You won't have rats and Mice.... Rats quickly eat any mice. So the sharp ones disappear... likewise the not so sharp ones lol. Go for it, good luck, and there will be more than just the odd one. One gone, forever set traps / feed for them as they - others - will be back.
OLDYELLOW Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 i dont see why the zinc / tin sheets arent used under loft floors it would certainly stop them getting in from underneath
Roland Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 Glass, smashed and placed, rammed into any hole will stop them ... but they'll just gnaore another hole. So, placing sheets of glass on a flat square surface, on floors and walls, then covered with another wooden means /Chip board / sheplass etc, or tongue and groove is wealthy and using a drill bit for glass, bolt them down and no rates or mice will ever get through that! Depending how big the loft is.... but saving a little now each week and doing straight after racing would well be a boon I'm a thinking!
just ask me Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 get some alpha chloralose ie magpie or crow kill mix it cat food this will kill them or if the pigeon dead mix with cooking oil and put on pigeons neck and that will kill them too u could actually put it on a live pigeon too with no ill effects its a great product on all kinds of vermin ;)
cowman Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 keep poison down 24/7 as if the rats can find an easy feed outside the loft they will not bother wasting time noring into the loft for food .
FoxesFan4Ever Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 i dont see why the zinc / tin sheets arent used under loft floors it would certainly stop them getting in from underneath Because its just 2 odd sheets i had from somewhere which Ijust thought would help with the problem for now. I dont have enough to cover the whole floor..just the weak point for now.

badgeman Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 I had aproblem with the rats a while ago ,to stop them coming through the floor i managed to get hold of some cheap kitchen surface tops ,the double sided ones and doubled the flooring with it ,that stopped them getting in, plus ferrets s---t to put em off ,plus a bit of feeding ,,all gone now lol,
Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 We are getting pestered with rats again at the compound. we got Piezon from Blackpool and the F***ers are getting through it in no time. Spoke to an old guy who stays close by with ferrets and he is coming down to sort it out for us. (Piezon Is better known as poison but the guys at the compound will know what i mean) JamesB
Guest Owen Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 I use both fen traps set in tunnels and poison in bait boxes. The best bait for the fen traps is peanut butter or chocolate. The down side of the bait boxes is the fact that you will get a dieing rat out in the open. Not nice. I had a run not long ago of catching 11 rats in 6 days with just two traps. They have not got into my shed but they are aways hovering about and I can never relax my guard.
aye ready Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 the best stuff i used which i brought back from belgium was the vermin glue.you put this stuff on a piece of plywood in a complete circle (no breaks) and then put your bait in the centre, once they stepped on this glue there's no way there coming off this plywood.even when the ones that were stuck were wriggling about it didn't deter others from walking across the glue
FoxesFan4Ever Posted May 3, 2009 Author Report Posted May 3, 2009 gets some peanut butter and mix with antifreeze and put near enty point under loft Just wondering..why anti freeze and not rat poison?
