What do the members think of a pigeon which was lost from a hard race and returned after a few days and dont show any signs of fret marks.

easy hard days dont suit this bird .not all birds can face hard days .he would still be in basket the next race. 2 strikes and your gone

I lost a bird for 3 days it came back and had obviusley not been in anybodies loft. that birds is now 2 years older and i rate it as one of the best birds in my loft, it is a club and fed winner. s o give iy a chance, is what i say.

Did it have fret marks when it came back.

spot on there, who knows what this bird endured, whats the the big hang up with fret marks

surely all birds deserve a 2nd chance as we,ve all heard about the one that took a wrong turn but later came good   the bird got home and who knows what it had to do to get home but it will have learnt something along the way   it got home so let it live to fight another day rather than just say bin it    kev

aye even Jansen brothers had a 3 strikes and there out polocy its made a mistake it may well have learned alot by it

its clearly had the brain to work home, and if has original rubber on etc prob has been out, give it a chance but if it does it again then its got a 2nd home and will dip out whenever the going gets tough, then bin it.

Definitely worth another chance....don't worry about fret marks.......individual birds will fret over different things. Set it by, and wait for next year, and treat it with a bit of thought.......don't keep flogging it up the road until you do lose it....proves nothing !!

If I read the thread right, you are looking for a fret mark at the wrong time. A bird thats been out for a few days probably won't have developed a fret yet - and there's no guarantee that it will. A fret mark happens after the bird's body has taken one almighty shock, any feathers that are growing at this time, stop growing. Then as the bird recovers, it starts growing again, and this leaves a pale mark across the feather.  Could be a week or so in the making and longer still before you notice it.

take it easy every race doesnt suit every bird i took advice on a certian breed of bird and ignored it if that bird turned up tomorrow it be staying how ever you have to draw the line

do you assum the bird has been flying for a month or has somebody had it in there loft for that length of time my personal opinion is look at the breeding and determin wether the bird should have made it and if andy eadie has one in front of you dispose of it.

Leave the bird alone. Let it mend itself up and let it try again. At the end of the season is the time to sort out what is to stay and what is to go. I have 16 boxes and I will not think of keeping even one bird above that. So, I sit down with a pencil and paper and look at how the birds have done. The ones I keep are the best of what I have got.

All things being equal, it is worth remembering that some birds that make a mistake can and do become very good racers.

My best bird was a nightmare as a young bird. He went missing quite a few times. Then he won a race with ease and went missing again. The following year as a yearling he was a differant pigeon. He won at Club Fed level and took a good position in the National from Giesson.

I my opinion, there is a right time to do everything and everything must be done at the right time.

   give it a box for next year I had a red cock lost hard channel race came home late november colour allwashed out moulted no sign of any frets next year from same racepoint clremont 400mls was 2 club 2 fed 13 combine  11 hours on wing best of luck

If the bird is not freted,well i would not expect much of it.Generally if a bird has had a hard time of it with nights out, it will be freted.But if it is bred of youur best birds then have to give it a 2nd chance.

Totally agree with you.Fret marks will take a few weeks to appear not days!!
