rich Posted January 28, 2010 Author Report Posted January 28, 2010 i give them "matrix" which i thought contained all the grit and minerals they needed, birds not feeding young and looking in fantastic condition , its just that they are going mad for the salt on the roads

Guest strapper Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 PM STRAPPER ,OLD YELLOW ,OR OWEN THEY PROB GIVE YOU ;)BETTER IDEA dave you were right with pink and black minerals...one has more salt in it...think its black. but birds pecking at the roads are just gaining grit...the salt is by now mainly washed away out of the grit. i did once wonder why couldnt there be some kind of block made like horses salt blocks? similar to the small grit mineral blocks we have.
Guest strapper Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1127749855 you may find info from this

Its pink mate, i used to put a tray of salt in the loft no more than one grain deep or the birds will gorge on it, i only did this when on young as i noticed my dirds were going the beach for salt water, i now mix pink minerals, pickstone and lime grit and tip it straight on to the floor of the loft and it works a treat, i was told that you can use horse blocks and that is better than the tray of salt, but this works best for me
mark croker Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Also i think some times they are looking and picking for the sake of it and not coz they need it, my birds have just been fed at 8 and are a the mo pecking around the garden, they dont need anything :-/:)
gulkie Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 u can buy a salt block i get 1 from my corn supplier, break a peice of and put it in a dish they will pick at it for ages, also give them lettuce with sea salt sprinkled on it especialy when feeding young. :)

Guest kevin b Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Be very careful when giving the birds salt, some will gorge on it and dehydrate. Sea salt is great stuff just dont let feeding pairs free access to it. A little at a time.
catchthepigeon Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Your birds need to have black minerals infront of them at all times black minerals provide all the salt needed.I give mine a salt tablet after a hard race
greenlands Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Birds can and will OD on salt ,make no mistakes with it ,it can knock the legs from them. Lindsay
marmite Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 if u can get it get a block of rock salt i used to keep a block on my loft roof they get what they want and they dont dissapeer down to the river or seaside to get it tbh when i didnt have it and had black minerals in the loft they still go to the beach or river to get it mine have gone there now just wanna get hold of a block of the rock salt
mosslands1 Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 you can buy rock salt from the salt mine in winsford cheshire ive used it for years just leave it where the birds can get it and just wash it now and again with the scrubbing brush
Guest frank dooman Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 i notice that many posts say espec. when feeding young i would have thought if you feed extra salt it will make the o/b drink alot and that could lead to wet feeding do you think thats the case
OLDYELLOW Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 if gourging themselves with salt buy a horse salt lick iododised mineral salt lick around £3 for a big bar at least it be clean and safe for them
mosslands1 Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 they wont eat too much rock salt its too hard its a lot harder than a cow lick block
