I have Just basketed my 80 Young birds and took them only a few miles for the first toss

I took a spare basket so i could put 12 ybs in it for releasing rather than letting the full 80 out together anyway

i let the first 12 go, up and up they went till they were specks we waited 5 mins till they dissepeard out of site

i put another 12 ybs into the spare basket ready for release then after looking around again to make sure the first 12 had not come back i released them they tryed to do exactly the same go high when this peregrine falcon came down and stooped into the batch of 12 narrowly missing a young red cock then another one which must have been higher came stooping down and clipped one of them scattering all the ybs we then watched the ybs regroup and head for home for 5 mins we watched them try to get back then wallop one went for them again clipping another one and instead of sending them home it pushed them south

so we put all the other ybs back into the car and went home only to count up 10 out of the 24 released then one more came back, then 1 hour and 10 mins later still nothing more 11 out of 24  so 13 short , I have never seen anything like this in my life !!!!!!!!!!!! I am gutted about it !!!!!!!

They are destroying the game you have a look at the peregrines at Derby, they are feeding 4 young, how much times a day are they having to kill to keep 4 going.

Hope you get your young birds back mate, best to leave the training for a couple of days.

At the end of the day, it dosent matter what time you go, where you go, they are alwasy somewhere about, maybe not at the lib point, but up the road a bit.

We liberated around 400 old birds to-day, the first thing i did was block the sun out with my fist to see if there was anything up above.

i miss counted i have 9 out of 24   15 missing

We have never had a problem here in Durham you see the odd one from time to time but up untill now they have never bothered the pigeons but i suppose times change

Have the Peregrines any preferred  feeding patterns?  It seems to me that early afternoon bird life seems to have a siesta, does this include Peregrines? Has anyone studied feeding patterns or are they totally indiscriminate.

They say the only kill to feed but you can take that with a pinch of salt, theres a guy who works at this place where there is peregrines, he says that they will kill in the morning, then late afternoon then thats it until the following day, again i think it will depend on how much they are feeding.

There is just too may of them now.

Exactly thats the way i feel at the minute , Still the 15 missing !!!!! So pleased i never relesed the lot together

You had that experience from a training toss, we here in kennoway have a peregrine living 300 yards away high up in the quary. Everytime we let our birds out its a lottery if they get hit or not. I tend to let mine out once a day at about 6pm, as in the morning is when they are out in force, even at that they sometimes cotton on to the regular releas. I hope you get your birds back, but how many times do you take a beating like that before you say bye bye to the sport (which is no fault of the sport). The local sparrow hawks are no better either, we have 2/3 here as well.

Agree 100%... but then that will never happen.

Golly the members won't even pay a little ole quiddy each for a proffessional mouth pice, Lobbyist and think tank ... Namely a P.R. firm that would put us in good light with Joe Public, and touch the right nerves, not only with the Goverment, but Dafra!

the long and the short of it is simple. The RPRA could afford, or levy each member a £1 BUT they daren't because of the groaning and moaning and stupid crap like 'Surely someone some where in the RPRA can do it... (Wait for it) would if they wanted, and loved the sport!'

Then the scenarios of WHO could do... and forget that they may run a buisness, let alone not geared up for it!Apathy, not jealousy is stiffling this sport... the wise one see the 'Ego's and self centre' cliches and leave! That's it in a nut shell. The rest hope on a wing and a prayer... Never going to happen.

not good, but you never seemed to get hawk attacking the first batch did you ? No , so think about it, you then start to let batches of 12 out one after another.... well the first batch you released was as good an invite as any to come over and see whats on the menu... you invited the hawk to come, should have let them all go together and then you would not have seen a hawk at all.  its a shame mate, but a lesson learned i guess.

they will attack at some point wether its the first or last batch. Firstly, don't take them to the same place again, take them further so they get a run at the area and secondly the next toss take 2 batches, let one go in the morning and the other go in the afternoon.

We have tried all times of day, they start coming without problem and then bang they come back split up and in pieces.

It is a great idea for clubs to get eagle owls but if they are released the RSPB will shoot them and if they are just flown as captive birds near nesting sites who is going to train and look after the owl?

had the same problem with perigrine last week, y/bs out for routine fly, perigrine attacked and plucked a y/b out of the air and scattered birds everywhere, 3 birds with chunks out of wings, 1 taken another still missing. not a pretty sight.

Hi all. Did you know that most fox hunt packs now keep owls which won't be being used at present? It is legal to fluch foxes to a bird of prey and that's why they use them. For non hunting folk .... foxes are still vermin and cause farmers problems.

I have recently set up a new loft in Telford which has been devastated by attack until I stuck up a plastic owl decoy.
