REDCHEQHEN Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Sparrow hawks 'hover' - as in they flap their wings and stay in the same place especially when fixated on their prey - then they pounce
billt Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Sparrow hawks 'hover' - as in they flap their wings and stay in the same place especially when fixated on their prey - then they pounce Idon't think so are you thinking of the kestrel

hotrod Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Idon't think so are you thinking of the kestrel NO MATE, I KNOW THE S/H DOES HOVER but not for long but it defo does mate.
billt Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 NO MATE, I KNOW THE S/H DOES HOVER but not for long but it defo does mate. Are you saying male or female as there's a huge differance in sizes, the hen is a bit large for hovering
hotrod Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 Are you saying male or female as there's a huge differance in sizes, the hen is a bit large for hovering both mate but as frankdooman says its normally in a strong wind ,just like the buzzard does ,and i know the size of cock and hen s/h's
billt Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 both mate but as frankdooman says its normally in a strong wind ,just like the buzzard does ,and i know the size of cock and hen s/h's Yeh I see what your saying the can hold their position in a wind
Guest stb- Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 both mate but as frankdooman says its normally in a strong wind ,just like the buzzard does ,and i know the size of cock and hen s/h's They glide around with the wind and thermals not hovering like a keteral as such but using the wind and thermals to hold themselves stationary for short periods
Guest IB Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 I think 'mobbing' is maybe the wrong word? I've posted before on streetwise actions of racing pigeons when there's bop about, seen it here now for years. The birds will take to the air and quickly gain height till they are same height as bop, or above it. Bop needs to be above the bird before it can strike. Few years back now, but watched my youngbirds fly backwards & forwards toward a hen sparrowhawk, flying same height, so birds seemed to sense they were safe. Wasn't pleased watching it though, I thought my birds were acting stupid. Obviously knew more than I did.
DOVEScot Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 you seem to believe that it doesnt happen just because you havent seen it thats your right but why are you throwing down challanges do you expect us all to run around with video camara,s hanging to our belts calm down its your choice believe or not ive seen mine on a no. of occiasions going towards the bop when i thought they should be heading in the other direction iam not talking about when the s/h or percy or buz. is attacking but when they are high in the sky I am the same Frank, although I think you are a man that is true to his word and also others that have posted the same I personally find it hard to believe that pigeons mob any birds of prey, everyday is a school day and I am willing to learn
Guest frank dooman Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 i dont know ifmob is the right word dovy as ib said but they defently fly towards them as if they know when they get on the same level they are safe but it does make your heart race a bit ive been out side shouting and bawling get out of there are yous mad the neighbours must think iam the mad one ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Guest frank dooman Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 oh and i think catch the pigeon could be hawkbait and also a few others could be wrong but i wasnt the last time he was on
Kyleakin Lofts Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 I have seen my birds circle the buzzards. They fly above them and below them. I have seen them fly that close that I thought they were going to collide. they were flying similar to tumblers in as much as they seemed to be deliberately dropping onto the buzzards. Whether you would call it mobbing, I don't know, I wouldn't. They didn't seem bothered in any way, but neither did the buzzards. I have at least 4 pairs of buzzards very close to me. There are also loads of kestrels. I have seen a quite large "kestrel", but it were hovering, so didn't think it was a sparrowhawk. I had an attack at the loft and all I seen was what looked like a very large bop taking off and leaving the pigeon which died later. I thought it may have been the buzzard although I didn't think they were fast enough for the pigeons. I was told it may have been a peregrine. The pigeons have been in since cause I'm just starting and can't afford any more losses. They took all day to come back and 3 never returned plus the 1 that died.

Some people do have camcorders if you cant prove it and i have never seen it then why cant someone film it
catchthepigeon Posted January 27, 2010 Report Posted January 27, 2010 do you have your own BOP with a name like catch the pigeon?????? ;D

They do soar up high in the sky but they are stealth attackers and pigeons know this so they are not worried if they appear when they are up high. They also chase birds into exhaustion and prey on them Peregrines are different they hunt on the wing either by getting up above their prey and punching one of them out the sky by dropping on them or striking a flock and taking one as best as they can that is why they cause so much havoc especially at liberation's and groups heading home I still think that at hot spots they should be hiring falconers with eagle owls to sort out peregrines before liberation and race paths :-/
