sapper756 Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Next door neighbour just informed me one of my birds was lying between his wheelie bins dead, he said he heard a noise and when went to investigate, he saw a HAWK on top of a pigeon, when I looked the poor youngster was minus it,s head, it was my first bred youngster this year :'( IS IT ALL REALY WORTH IT???????
billt Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Yeh I'ts a sickener, I don't think the non-fancy realise how much planning, effort and cash goes into breeding and racing the birds, we must be gluttons for punishment, all the best
ally mac Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 Thats a sickener, I had mine out yesterday and all seems okay, the hawk was around last week and had a go at the old birds but missed. I've got my orange light on now and no sign of the bugger since i put it on. Its worth a try if you havent tried it already. Al.

alec guinness Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 my old dad says as soon as daffodils are out the sparrowhawk is at its deadliest. ;) ;)
neneland Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 last year for me taught me a lesson.... in earlier years I too bred early, mainly for the One Loft Races, but these have become too expensive to enter. Last year, because of the move, my youngsters were bred in May, and these were still old enough to race and even did Guernsey! So with that in mind, why breed early just to see your well bred and hopes dashed before they have even had a chance by hawks and any other reasons to be lost? No, for me, I pair up later, less worry, less feed & fewer losses.... Mike Saint
Guest joshdonlan Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 just sort the problem out ;) something we all have to do ourselves

billt Posted March 21, 2010 Report Posted March 21, 2010 They breed in May, 5 eggs in a clutch, the male must be too small to incubate, male feeds the hen on the nest but only finches or tit family so the hen is building up body reserves now so this is a bad time for us and again when she's feeding that brood
