Tony C Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 looking to buy a pair of young stock birds i race vandenabeeles has anybody been succesfull crossing with a diffrent strain or even a diffrent line or source of gabys :-/ cheers jimmy Whatever I've crossed my Vandenabeeles with they've won for me, Van Loons, FVW, my own family & other fanciers family's.
swilcox Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Ive been extremely dissapointed with them on the whole, even when the loft have been on super form they just havnt kept up and the harder it gets the farther they fall behind. I orginally brought a few in as they were doing well in the UK and all my other lines were dutch but there not a patch on the Zwols and Molevelds. Just my experience mind. Stu
john@formula 1 lofts Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Hi mate we have had very good succes with them both pure and crossed they cross very well with the Ron Williamsons we have and my Mum & Dad have done well crossing them into there Janssens. cheers John
swilcox Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Hi John It goes to show that people have very different success with many different lines and families, the main thing is to find the birds that suit you. On the whole Gaby pigeons havnt been successful in the West Country, maybe as they have to fly against the wind every week (only a guess) yet they have done some real damage in the South East. I make the wind comment as i know they didnt excel in the West Midlands too but i have noticed they have done really well up the east side. So John when i pop over i will pick up a pair of they Williamson Pigeons Stu
john@formula 1 lofts Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Hi mate As you know you are more then welcome any time mate. I think what you say about strains doing well in certain areas has a lot of truth in it mate. having spoken to people that have flown in different areas i.e scotland north east and now south east they say different strains excel in the different conditions and terrain they have flown in. some food for thought John p.s about time you come over and see me
swilcox Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 I have to use some holidays up soon so i might well pop over for the day with big Nigel Templer.
Tony C Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Cant agree with the wind bit Stuart as they’re winning sections/feds around here on the same day both north and south, both cant have the wind up their bottles. Perhaps the nearer to their origins they get the better they perform ;D

Stu Well Swilcox, would say the first part is correct in principle, but the other way round :-/. Moreso, I believe, once you've set your system the birds that find they like it, that it suit them will do well. Wind, well no creature realy has any time for the wind I fear .... though a little headwind / breeze on a hottish day would be a boon I guess.

Stu Have to agree with Stuart, I've had them from the best sources and they've been okay youngsters but crap old birds and there's very few different breeds that I've had and not been able to make them perform to a certain degree.
Dikke Darren Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 We raced 4 2 year olds from the only pair of Gaby's we have (a son of De Limoges x a granddaughter of Ronker) for the first time across the pond as OB's last year and none of our other racers could get anywhere near them, the lowest position they took in 6 channel races was 5th club. They were just off the pace up to the coast, but unbeatable (to our other pigeons) from 300-500 miles in their first year of channel racing. We've bought a Koopman hen direct out of De Wondere Dirk to try with the cock this year.
T_T Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Stuart Wilcox, Hope your'e right about them winning heavy down the South East coast. I am just drafting a few in from a good friend on PBs and I feel confident about it. He destroyed the competion last year flying North Road and has made an excellent start to the season this year so signs are good. Can't wait to give them a crack. I suppose as with any family, you have to get the right lines and listen to advice from the guy you get em' off.
greenlands Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Hi T_T. The last ten words in your post carry a lot of weight especially if they are winning for the fancier.Lindsay
