Hi all

Yesterday i noticed one of my birds looking like it had hurt its one

foot.

I checked it for bruises but could not find something wrong.

All were basketed for 140km tos today and after liberation the

convoyer phoned me and told me that one of my birds was dead in the

basket.

After giving me the number i remembered that it was the one with the

seemingly sore foot.

The other birds came well from the toss, no problems at all.

Has anybody got an idea what could have gone wrong with this bird,

dying within 24hours?

Was there any swelling in the foot, not being a scare monger but para typhoid can strike like this.Hope it's not that.Lindsay

sounds like paratyphoid , i suggest you get them tested at the vets to ensure your remaining birds stay healthy

could quite of easily hit a wire and damaged itself internaly but i still advise getting your birds tested  :)

Did it have a yellow spot on its foot?  Possibly gout.

GOOD one.

My thoughts after examining her and not finding anything wrong was that maybe the electronic ring hindered her as she was a youngster.

i thought a ruptured spleen can occur and cause death in this way

I'm sure that isn't the cause  :) pigeons don't have a spleen. But I think you're on the right track, its been an internal injury of some sort.

One of mine came home from a race two weeks ago limping, by the Sunday the foot was off the floor. Kept her at home the following week till she was walking normally, trained her to 40 miles to make sure she was OK and put her back in this week's race, she came OK..

Foot injury possibly down to hitting wires, so it's not just the leg to consider, bird may have taken heavy knock, downed, heavy landing and been injured.

Hows about the possibility of a Snakebite or Wasp / Bee sting or an allergy to something eaten.

Our lass makes a wonderful hotpot, you eat & eat its so good but when you try to leave the table you go dizzy and pass out, only to come around in the arms of the ugliest woman you ever met, with a gurning toothless smile she says " you not leaving the table yet, you've not touched your pudding". Oh were did I go wrong..................................help!
