Guest joshdonlan Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 How can i mark eggs which i want to put under feeders to recognise the parentage of the birds? I did hear that marking them can killthe chick due to toxins. Josh

Simeon Turner Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 use a black marker pen i have used one for years with no ill effects dave Same for us, you could also use a pencil and shade it an area if you have a careful hand and don't press on too much
newbold Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 you can get non toxic felt tips . i yous ordenery felts had no problems
THE FIFER Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I use an ordinary pencil just put the nest number the eggs are out of
REDCHEQHEN Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I write them down in a book - who is feeding what and from whom - so no need to mark the eggs - just make sure the boxes are marked/recorded to begin with - and then when the birds are rung - the exercise is virtually complete

Something going on here ? Rembrant would you like to explain? We can meet up at Blackpool and check out some colours???????
Ian McKay Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 The next poat will say I am off topic but someone asked the question I only answered ;D ;D ;D
Guest Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 I use an HB pencil. All other suggestions above may, not necessarily will, be absorbed by the shell, and could damage the embryo. Poultry keepers only ever use pencils to mark eggs they want for breeding purposes, for this very reason.
pigeonscout Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 Some markers can kill by removing the protective coating on the shell that stops bacteria entering the egg. I lost 40 eggs because they where marked with a felt tip marker. when I am fostering eggs I just put into my records that box one is fostered in box 7. Then when the young in box 7 are rung I put the ring numbers down to the pair in box 1.
Taylorsloft Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 i have never had any problems with felt pens
Blue Chequer Pied Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 i have never had any problems with felt pens They need to be non-toxic waterbased if possible

Ian McKay Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 goes with your handbag. ;D :X So you noticed wondered how long it would take. Did you like the colour ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
pigeonscout Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 They need to be non-toxic waterbased if possible A non-permanent marker uses an erasable ink — an ink that adheres to the writing surface without binding or being absorbed by it — for temporary writing with overhead projectors, whiteboards, and the like. They may also be used by children when adults want to be able to clean up after them. The erasable ink does not contain the toxic chemical compounds xylene and/or toluene, unlike permanent markers.
pigeonscout Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 You can always mark the nest bowl they are in and not the eggs.
Guest bigda Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 when the egg or eggs hatch what then! the one that's going to feed it is the ones you should have logged as,the foster parents no marking the egg :-/
