the pigeon_milker Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 capsules are good but i have it in the water all the time except when worming or medicating they may not like it much at first but they soon take to it does them the world of good
pigeonman007 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Not sure if it does them any good or not but I give mine Garlic powder which is for horses, comes in a 500grm tub and is cheap as chips. I mix the powder in with their corn moistened either with cod liver oil or lemon juice. Took them a while to get used to it but when they get it added now they readily eat the corn
Guest kev d Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 the best way i found to use it is buy using it for two weeks then a two week break it works alot better that way .
DAVIDL Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 hi i use garlic cloves in the drinking water and at the moment its in 24/7... (hi kevd hope the birds are doing well for you)
Guest IB Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I use it in the drinker on the Saturday night (of the race) and all the following day (Sunday) into Monday morning to take care of anything the race birds may have brought home with them - although I haven't started this year yet because my birds are still feeding youngsters. I use a 20g bulb peeled and crushed into 2 litres of water (my drinker capacity) - mash and all goes in. That's a 2% solution. It needs to be 2% - 5% to be effective thats preventative at 2% and curative at 5%. It's changed for fresh mix on the Sunday. Effective against bacteria, virus, fungus, mould, trichomonods, worms, cocci (lowers count) so it's a good catch-all. But remember that 'bacteria' includes good bacteria too, so leave 2 days clear before and after giving probiotics, as it is likely to kill them too. I also keep what's left of the drinker for the bath water the following Sunday. It's also an insecticide. Not bad for 30p.
alec guinness Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 What is the best way to administer Garlic and how often would you use it. :-/ clove crushed with garlic crusher and popped straight into drinker,we do this tuesday and same water topped up next day as the properties are still there, have done this now for over 25 years. :)
Peckedhen Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I use a clove in a 7 litre drinker whether they are feeding youngsters or not.
hotrod Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 i do the same as alec guiness crush cloves , and put 3/4 cloves in a 500ml bottle and leave for a week in fridge and then put in drinkers and do the same for the next week .i do this every week on a sunday and leave overnight and top up monday
greenlands Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 This might change your mind on how you give your birds Garlic.Very good reading.Lindsay http://www.myrtlelofts.com/vet7.htm
terry mccarthy Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 got to asda get garlic paste it very good but warn u now it is very very strong for the old nostrills
wilkins Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 is the paste pure ? or does it have additives i put garlic and onions in the juicer then add the juice to a mix of sunflower and rape seed oil and keep it in the fridge
Delboy Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 The problem with garlic is the pigeons hate it. Pay attention to how much less water they drink when it is in the fountain. However, this can be benefitial when feeding ybs as it firms up the droppings round the nest . When birds are racing I think it is best on the food if possible.
Guest IB Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 I usually steer clear of processed garlic, because I do not know what has been done in the processing. If heat has been used, then it destroys the main active ingredient illicin. I think you're basically left with 'taste' - flavouring for food. Garlic also changes over time. Illicin is created on crushing or bruising, and lasts only a few hours, then breaks down completely into other compounds. The main antimicrobial action is from illicin itself, but the other 'stuff' is quite potent too.
milecrosslofts Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 i never use to use garlic but when i tried it i realisd how better my birds were on it, i add it to watter 5 days a week monday to friday,my birds been 100% better since. mark

Guest Freebird Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 This might change your mind on how you give your birds Garlic.Very good reading.Lindsay http://www.myrtlelofts.com/vet7.htm Very interesting reading. Regarding the vampire "myth" garlic is used in the horsey world to help prevent the horses getting kleg and mosquito bites so there is more to the myth than meets the eye and I think this would benefit the birds in the same way.
