Breakaway won 59 1sts, lost as a six year old, having topped the fed the same year,  he was bred by Stan Walker from a Belge stray he had in paired to a Belge stray Arthur Beardsmore had in, so the story goes anyway!

Bit worrying that most of these birds are in the distant past, are we losing the plot?

ETS will stop the multiple firsts by the same bird.. when a top loft has 3 together they always catch the fav first.. once that bird has many firsts to his name they keep on catching him first if it is in the first bunch,, ETS takes this away,, first in gets the card..

so the 30 and 40 x 1sts will be less as I know many including us catch the fav bird first..

Without a doubt in my eyes Fortune Lady, this hen is a legend and pure Scottish ;) better than the continentals ;)

Others that come to mind are Starview Pegasus a SNFC winner and sire of a SNFC winner, Kingdom Boy a double Scottish national winner ;)

Breakaway was the greatest racing machine that will ever take to the air.

In the same breath should always be the Spitfire, Concorde and ... Breakaway.

He was only a smallish 1972 cheq wf cock, very henish looking, but boy could he race.

In his 59x1st prizes was if my memory serves me right something like 14x1st Fed (usually between 2000-4500 birds).

His number of firsts may have been the highest, but more important was the quality of the victories and what he was beating. In the 1970's the average club in the West Midlands was usually 200-500 birds, not like nowadays when many club races have just a few dozen birds.

It has been known for this great champion to win 1st club, 1st Fed on a Saturday, 1st open race on a sunday (marking on the morning), and then 1st open race on the Bank Holiday Monday (marking on the sunday night) - three wins in three days. !!!!!!

Ron Green would take on all-comers with this superstar, going after every open race in the area - in the days when all top lofts were welcome - no body excluded. Not like nowadays when tight radius's are drawn or when lofts are refused entry into so called big races.

Breakaway was an all time champion, when the West Midlands had its great racers. Days when the greats such as 'Gammy' and 'Brigadier' would turn up at the same open to give battle to Breakaway. Those were the days.

Breakway went down when chasing his 60th victory. He had nighted out for the first time, but Ron then pushed him one time too many, despite the signs.

I believe he was bred from a KO Nipius paired on to a stray that came into the loft.

PS : Alan.. you are wrong. Breakway was indeed the very best of a great bunch.

PPS : Mike.. Be careful what you say, as it could be interpreted wrong. What you probably meant to say is that at times Ron would have Breakaway and a couple of others drop together, but would invariably clock Breakaway first.

It was Ron Green - you could only dream to have a bird like that very unlikely his record will ever be equelled or surpassed and if it ever is in my lifetime I will raise a glass to it

Was just reading a bit about 'Fortune Lady'.. Not only was she a double Gold Award winner.. her dam won 6 channel positions thus gaining a Gold Award, also her grand - dam won 7 channel positons also gaining a Gold Award..

Then.. her sire was a son on Tom McEwan's 1970 yb National winner when paired to his 1977 4th open Rennes..

Talk about bred for the job..!!

i think it was 57 but i'm open to correction

59 it was. Also I take it that the poster means racers. As for breeders / stock I think Stamvater took some beating!

This bird was never raced, just another example of a great fanier knowing his stuf as a stockman and as a racer of course.

Village was a bird and half too.

Incidently Stamvater was aptly named, mean 'The producer'.
