I remember reading somewhere once that they used bovril during the racing season because it is a beef and yeast extract and a good source of vitamin B12 and so boosted there birds for racing because as you probably know a pigeon doesnt get any animal proteins in its diet and so has to be substituted in the form of vitamin B12.  Is there anybody who uses this or has tried it and if so what do you think.

I know I have also heard somewhere that pigeons dont absorb animal proteins but was wondering if this is true then why is vitamin B12 advertised and sold as an invaluable source of energy by top pigeon supplements like oropharma,  gem supplements,  aviform,  etc etc,  before racing and during breeding.

Supplements, vits, etc are big business. I think what you've maybe heard is that Vitamin B12 can only come from an animal food source, so by default we can't supply it by feeding only grains to our pigeons ?

There are those who suggest this is wrong, and that gut bacteria produce Vitamin B12 which the host can digest and make use of.
