Thimbles Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 When we go to Blackpool they miss two days feeding on the Saturday/Sunday, as long as they have plenty of water and they are always glad to see me Birds missing a feed will soon develope fret marks on there feathers
chickadee Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Birds missing a feed will soon develope fret marks on there feathers They get a good feed on a Friday morning and I don't get back till after dark on the Sunday, I was worried about this before I went to Blackpool for the first time and I was told this is what a lot of fanciers done :-/

rob09 Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 when i fast my birds its like snow flakes in the loft do it 2 weeks before the first club race then half way true season recharges the batries
Delboy Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 I have done this for years when the birds arent looking great. Grit only, garlic in water and watch the down flow again When you fast a pigeon or human, you get all the major organs working and thats the kickstart they need sometimes. If early breeding go through same procedure with hens before mating
Roland Posted October 25, 2009 Report Posted October 25, 2009 Why not feed your birds barley? Barley can - and I feed barley nigh all the time, sometimes with Wheat and a proportion of maples / tic beans. The good thing is it is a naturual blood purifier. Bad thing it lacks a fair bit, and has low proportions on other essential properties. This can lead to two things. 1. overwieght because they over eat, if allowed, to compensate what they are missing. 2. One certainly doesn't want any toxin poison that can occur with too mauch barley.
wilkins Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 wouldnt the fall of down be nothing to do with the garlic in the water but more to do with them not drinking much water at all due to not being fed,
mark croker Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 it makes them belive that winter is on top of them so they try to get the moult over with before winter gets on to much, when racing is over my birds get 1/2 oz morning and 1/2 oz at night, jim biss was one for cutting the food in the off season but i dont think he missed a feed, its not for me that, in the racing my birds get 2 1/2 oz a day so this is a big drop for them, i think that when you start prep for racing and start feeding good again they are easier to get in to condition,
Guest KING BILLY Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 the prob at thiss time of the year birds and other animals try and buld up fat resevis for hard times in the winter and if they are left to do so can have castrofic afects when trying to get rid of the buld up of fats in places where it takes a long time to get rid of it hart kidnes and liver these are the 3 most vital components in pigeons so be verey carful not to let them buld up to much fat so a day of fasting wont do them much harm but if you have them like turkes it will take you a lot longer to get them wright at paring up time whare the need to be in good order ;) ;)
BLACK W F Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 to true billy bang on the money most important time of year

Humans and most other species have the same inbuilt mechanism but due to us and the birds having everyday access to food and sadly too much for most we need to control it. I think it funny that we all worry about having our birds in tip top condition and all the problems with over loading their organs and fasting yet very few worry about our own or families diet ;D ;D ;D
ALF Posted October 26, 2009 Report Posted October 26, 2009 A few years ago i had an old stock hen that was too fat and wouldnae lay (she was always a big hen) but an old guy that comes to our lofts everyday told me he could fix her in 5 days and took her away on the monday and brought her back to me on the saturday and it was like getting another pigeon back so i asked him what he done and he said he put her in an old basket he still had at his house and all she got was multi vits in the water and it never done her any harm not getting fed for those 5 days and she went on to breed a couple of handy pigeons for me

No matter what you have any can make it or not as the case may be for all sorts of reasons, gift/free birds topping the cards and golden pedigrees doing nothing in the same lofts under the same regime we all just live the dream :) :)
