REDCHEQHEN Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 When your grandson asks for help with an assignment And you haven't a clue! I've googled but not come up with any suggestions as to what non mendelian traits are associated with dogs
peter pandy Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 See Dictionary under "MENDELISM".. Heredity based on the characteristics transmitted as genes.
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 3, 2020 Author Report Posted November 3, 2020 I have found an article re human non mendelian traits, and hoping he can relate it to dogs - thanks for a nudge in the right direction
billt Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 Hi Sue, Mendel was the man that worked out that genes from sire and dam determined the physical size and shape of the animal, as you know there are many different breeds in dogs, I think the non-mendelian traits, ie. not visible, would be like Border Collies work sheep, Hounds hunt, Greyhounds race. Hope this helps.
Kyleakin Lofts Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 Non Mendelian traits could be apportioned to the environmental effects. Whilst the female is pregnant, she could become ill. This illness would have an effect on the unborn pups. Similarly, incorrect feeding can have effect. Often white markings can appear when they shouldn't. These could be caused by the environment, not being caused by the genes would mean they are non Mendelian effects. Refer him to the Law of Filial Regression. Hope this helps him. I am not a geneticist, but I have studied it to a "lay" level prior to and whilst breeding and showing my dogs from 1976 through to the mid to late nineties.
Kyleakin Lofts Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 "Old Hand" refers to Mendel in his book the "Strain Makers".
REDCHEQHEN Posted November 4, 2020 Author Report Posted November 4, 2020 Thank you - I'm happily passing all information on
