When a new bacteria is found there is an antibiotic made to kill it. Baytril is a broad spectrum antibiotic which Im told contains 2000 different antibiotics. That means that only one antibiotic goes to work on the bacteria your bird has and the other 1999 go to work on the birds immune system. You say you are going to give your young birds 14 days of baytril before they get the paramyxo jab why would you treat birds with baytril if they are not sick? The makers of paramyxo jab do not say that this is required. I think it is just another one of them stories started by the guys that are selling Baytril. The paramyxo jab was around long before the use of Baytril on pigeons and it worked just as well then as it does now. The system of treating with baytrill before the jab was use for the paratyphoid jab not the paramyxo and is use in a lot of the one loft races.

Could it be it was taken of the market because it was only 30% successful which means 70% went on to become supper bugs

Im no expert on baytril but thought the report made good reading.

This is what the report said The results indicated that ampicillin and doxycycline prevented illness in 80% of birds tested, erythromycin in 70% of birds tested, enrofloxacin (Baytril) in 30% of birds tested, and trimethoprim in 10% of birds tested. Obviously, the two poorest drugs in these tests were Baytril and trimethoprim, so they would not likely be the first choices for treatment of this disease, although are very useful in other situations. The results of these experiments involving live birds treated with antibiotics correlated very well with the usual type of antibiotic sensitivity testing done routinely by many veterinary diagnostic laboratories. In such laboratory tests, live birds and animals are not used, but even so, agreement between the two types of tests was very good. So where in that does it say it was 70% successful???

Must be dry easy to take down and put back up in sections. If it is an old loft and painted inside this could be hiding faults rot, etc. Price depends on what was use to build it, tongue & groove, overlap, or ply, chip board, and how good the frame work is. Also take into account the price of getting it from A to B. If your not sure take some pics of it post them on here tomorrow and im sure people on here will tell you if it is good and what price to pay.

No club should have the right to close its doors on a flyer that has not broke any rules. I seen this lots of times where the top flyers are left out in the cold. Club boundaries should be made that they meet each other that way everyone will be within a clubs boundaries. If a person breaks the rules then he is out. He should not be forced to leave the sport because he wins. What sort of a person tries to put the top flyer out of the sport so he can then get on the result sheet? I will tell you a very sad one.

jimmy white I have to agree when you say put an old bird in with young birds and the old bird will leave them and go on its own. At times I train my young bird 15 mile from home at a friends loft while his birds are out flying I let them go single up they join his birds for one or two circles then break for home.

This site gives good reading about baytril and according to this report baytril is not very good. I know from experience that if you use it as the birds are moulting the birds new flight feathers are brittle this has also be documented in the pigeon press on the continent. http://www.ifpigeon.com/IF/articles/Streptococcus_bovis_infection.html

Why treat for five if the bird only has one?

Pebbles are good the kind you buy for the bottom of flower pots they are very absorbent and let the dust filter to bottom put them down 4ins deep. you can buy bags of them at most garden centres. They can be cleaned every couple of months in a cement mixer or hose down and left to dry then reused. You could also get an Air cap they are very good.

Albear get some cooking oil put it on the backs of tumblers and sprinkle something that does not taste nice on the oil if you know what I mean. The tumblers make great targets for him and are easy prey. Do it at breeding time and you will hit 4 with one stone.

Jimmy if someone has to breed 100 young birds a year to finish a young bird season I don't think he is breeding the kind of bird that will fly 600 miles when older. To tell a new comer he needs to have 100+ young birds to finish a young bird season is going to put them off right from the start. I have never raced more than 35 young birds and have done very well and they go to 5 250 mile + 3 channel races and at the end I will have 20+ left so why people need to race 100+ I will never know.

jimmy white your 100% right when you say befreind someone.

I think we need to try and keep the fanciers we have in the sport make it more fun for them. How can we expect new members to join if the old members find the fun has gone? I would be aiming my sites on the 25+ year olds to join the sport. Teens have no time and have a lot more to do with their money. We need the guys that are married settled have their own house and the money to put up a loft, etc. Kids need a loft clock feed money and someone to train their birds? unless you get the parents backing there is no chance.

ETS did not bring an end to the sport in other country's that have it. I personally think it will help older fanciers to stay in the sport longer. The sport for me is about the fastest pigeon from A to B not how fast I can catch and clock it.

I think it would scare the life out of a pigeon

Mick Ganus from Ganus family lofts in the USA has the best collection of birds any where in the world. So I would have to say the top birds are now in the USA.
-
What do you mean by from 500 miles??
-
I think there are good birds all over. In one loft races where birds are sent from all over the world no one country dominates the result.
