A 2 ins gap full length front and back eaves with inside ceiling to control the air flow. The grass in the fields early morning are soaking wet but just 3 feet up on the hedge the leaves are dry.

I like to put bowl in from day one then about the 4th day I put nest felt in bowl and some straw on the floor. I have found they dig holes in the felt if it is in from day one. If they are last years young birds and will be flying to a different loft or section put the straw on the garden so they have to fly in and out to build the nest. They will be in and out every 2 min's and this gives them confidence to trap to the new section.

You are adding calcium to the birds diet by putting it in the gully pots. But like it has been said on this tread it can be put into the water or over the feed.
-
If I ever hear a pigeon ask me for something it will be time for me to call it a day. Do you think it is harmful to give your pigeons calcium?

Our birds do not live in the wild so they do not have access to the things they would find in the wild. If they did live in the wild they would be nothing more than street or barn birds.

Some times you will get old prisoner stock birds going of their legs and it is caused by a lack of magnesium. Two of these tabs will have them back up on their feet within a couple of hours. Old Hand's Elementals Elementals of Magnesium and Iodine. I do not want to post a link to another site but if you search for (old hand pigeon) you will find it.

You can always mark the nest bowl they are in and not the eggs.
-
A non-permanent marker uses an erasable ink — an ink that adheres to the writing surface without binding or being absorbed by it — for temporary writing with overhead projectors, whiteboards, and the like. They may also be used by children when adults want to be able to clean up after them. The erasable ink does not contain the toxic chemical compounds xylene and/or toluene, unlike permanent markers.
-
Some markers can kill by removing the protective coating on the shell that stops bacteria entering the egg. I lost 40 eggs because they where marked with a felt tip marker. when I am fostering eggs I just put into my records that box one is fostered in box 7. Then when the young in box 7 are rung I put the ring numbers down to the pair in box 1.

Whats the difference between Tumblers & Rollers?
pigeonscout replied to GypUK's topic in Fancy & Show Pigeons
Take 100% Orange 100% Apple, and 100% Grape juice mix them together you will no longer have pure Orange, Apple, or Grape juice, instead you will have 100% pure fruit juice. A pigeon strain starts out as a combination of crosses until the breeder is happy with the offspring. Once they have done that they go on to inbreed / line breed so generation after generation carry the same blood and characteristics. If the person who created this strain is called Mr X the birds will be pure Mr X. -
Whats the difference between Tumblers & Rollers?

It does not mater what blood A B or C had before they where paired as the young from A and B will be pure AB blood and the young from AC will be pure AC blood. If you keep breeding from them lines you will have pure ABC blood. -

If you pair cock A to hen B and C the blood of the young will be made up of AB and AC. Then pair the AB blood to the AC blood and you will have blood made up of ABC. This ABC blood was put together by MR Van Pigeon so lets call it Mr Van pigeon Blood. If Mr Van pigeon keeps breeding from theses same ABC blood lines would that blood not be pure Mr Van pigeon? If not why not? -

Pea straw is good but most straw is ok, first wrap nest bowls in 3 or 4 sheets of newspaper this will help keep the straw dry by absorbing the damp from the inside of bowl to the outside where it can dry better. Put a hand full of straw into a small bag and pop it into the micro wave for 30 sec's this will kill anything the straw may be carrying. I have been told that sawdust has been found to get into the not yet healed umbilical cord of the newly hatched young birds. This then becomes infected and can be seen when the young are 4 or 5 days old as a small lump of puss which some fanciers mistake for canker.

I have found the best way to tame young birds are to put a fold down shelf on one side of loft or small table and have them about 18 ins of the floor. When you wean the young birds they will be on a bed of straw or shredded paper on the floor or about a week before they can fly to their perch. When you enter the loft put their food up on the shelf and lift each young birds hold for 10 sec's and then put it up onto the shelf to feed. After a couple of days they start to associate your hands with something nice i.e. food and in 4 or 5 days they will be running to you to be lifted to the food and they will never fear your hands again. It is time consuming I know but it pays of later when you are taking them training as you can lift them straight of the perch with one hand. There is nothing as bad as chasing a bird round the loft to catch it for a race. The last thing that bird remembers before going to the race is not his motivation but some nut case chasing it all over the loft. If pigeons do not fear your hand they will fight it.

I agree with you 100% one hand full at a time on the floor until they start to leave the barley

I wish clubs would form teams to race against other club teams just like foot ball teams dart teams pool teams, Top flyers would then be looked up to and not over at.

Darkness young birds
pigeonscout replied to andrecrock's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Going by what Mike Ganus says in his young bird video you should take them off the dark 5 weeks before the first race you want to win as that is when they come into top form. My young birds go on the dark from they leave the nest, Others put them on dark when they drop first flight and some are now putting them on dark for 9 weeks only and taking off the longest day. I do not know what is best as they all seem to have the same result. You have to remember that the darkness system only helps the birds to have all their main flights for the longer races at the end of the young bird season. There are other ways of making sure this happens i.e. light system or the power molt.
