  5. The Joe Murphy Column Continuing with my highlighting this year’s SNFC winners we come to the longest race in the race programme the Ancenis race with 100 members sending 296 birds. The convoy were liberated with the Midland National FC at 06-30am into a west to south west wind along with the 4000 MNFC birds. Winning 1st 2nd & 7th open SNFC is Craig Halbert of Eastriggs who is creating history within the national as he won 1st open in this same race in 2014 and was 3rd & 8th open from Ancenis in 2015. The 2016 national winner is a 2 year old blue hen named ‘Solway View Queen’ who recorded a velocity of 1198 for the 533 miles home. She is bred down from ‘Morning Joy’ who competed in my Sporting Challenge as she won 1st section A 13th open from the Alencon Gold Cup race. Craig wins the Challenge Gold Globe, The Gleniffer Challenge Trophy, and the 1st section A Trophy. He also wins The Vaux Tankard for winning 2nd open well done Craig. The E R Williamson Trophy for the fancier with the best combined average with 2 nominated pigeons was won by Dennis Anderson of Annan. Dennis won 14th 28th & 47th open with 3 of his entries well done Dennis. We now come to the trophy that Margaret & I presented to the national for the best velocity pigeon in section C & G (North of the Firth of Forth) the winner is Frank Mitchell of Comrie in West Fife who timed in his 5 year old blue bar hen flying 612 miles to win 39th open and secure The Mr & Mrs J Murphy Trophy, 1st section C trophy. Only 2 other fanciers from section C made the open result these being Willie Donachie of Dundee who had the furthest flying bird in the race flying 635 miles to win 2nd section C 42nd open. Jim Doig of Cardenden is 3rd section C 44th open flying 614 miles. Congratulations to these 3 fanciers on their achievements. Moving to the west of Scotland now we come to the trophy in memory of my late dear friend: The George Rankin Memorial Trophy for 1st bird into the West Section who obviously wins 1st Section E Trophy and this was Davie Allison from Hamilton. He timed in his 3 year old blue bar cock to win 24th open flying 594 miles. At this point I would just like to highlight the only other West section pigeon a (4 year old blue bar hen)to win a prize being 2nd section E 46th open flying 598 miles to the loft of Billy Graham of Uddingston congratulations to both these fanciers. 1st section B winners are a household name in the pigeon sport in Scotland the father and son partnership of Richard & Jamie Combe of Elphinstone who won 15th open with their 3 year old chequer hen. A man making a name for himself as a good 600 mile fancier is David Jamieson of East Calder who wins 1st & 3rd section D 10th & 21st open with his winner of the section a 3 year old chequer white flight hen that won 3rd section D 20th open last year from Ancenis flying 598 miles. Once again congratulations to all the fanciers who make the open result. Unfortunately section F (extreme west of Scotland) and section G (the North of Scotland) were Not Won. Craig Halbert 1 & 2 national Ancenis Richard and Jamie Combe of Elphinstone Good SNFC Birds Before I go on about this week’s excellent birds I received a phone call from Colin Bain of Ratho who won a SNFC Silver Award at this year’s national presentation with his good hen ‘Miss Abigail’. I stated that Colin bred this wonderful hen however this was not totally correct as Colin and his good friend Chris McCann of Currie had joined forces to have a small stock loft with both their best pigeons housed in it. Chris kept these at his home and once the youngsters were weened they were split between Colin & Chris racing lofts. So in actual fact ‘Miss Abigail’ was bred by Chris in this small stock loft at Currie. Colin also informs me that Chris has moved house and is now residing in the south side of the Scottish capital. I’m sorry for my mistake in saying that Colin bred the hen and wish Chris all the best with the birds at his new address. This week’s top birds I concentrate on the last 3 fanciers to win a SNFC Silver Award with 2 from section D and the other from section B in the Scottish national club. The first is to A Watson of Lauriston near Falkirk with his dark chequer white flight hen SU12NW 1519 named ‘Gert’ after his mother Gertrude. This hen won 11th section D 176th open Ypres a distance of 449 miles in 2014 the following year she was sent to the Gold Cup race and won 5th section D 52nd open flying 547 miles then this year she was again entered for the Gold Cup this time from Reims and she won 8th section D 106th open flying a distance of 570 miles to win her SNFC Silver Award winner We now come to J Hadfield of Blackburn in West Lothian with his blue chequer cock SU12W 1173 named ‘Whitehill Prince’ in 2013 he was sent to Ypres a distance of 440 miles and won 20th section D 232nd open the following year he was sent to the Gold Cup race from Alencon and won 7th section D (no open position) flying 537 miles then in 2015 he scored from the inland national race from Eastbourne a distance of 389 miles (this cancellation was due to the national not being able to race from Ypres) then in 2016 he was again set up for Ypres and won 13th section D 112th open to win his coveted SNFC Silver Award in 2016. We come to section B fancier John F Bosworth of Elphinstone of East Lothian with blue cock SU12P 6852 named ‘Blue Smoke’ who wins a SNFC Silver Award for 3 times a winner from over the English Channel: As a yearling the blue cock won 9th section B 18th open flying 426 miles. The following year he won 14th section B 62nd open from Clermont a distance of 506 miles. This year 2016 he won 3 times in the SNFC being 63rd section B 189th open from Buckingham a distance of 283 miles, he then went to Ypres flying 426 miles and won 152nd open (no section prize) he was then entered into the last old bird race of the year and won 22nd section B (to win his Silver Award) 59th open flying 491 miles. John also has a blue hen SU10P 3800 who has won 6 times in the national and has already won a Silver Award in 2015 and added to her achievements by winning a prize from Reims in 2016. As a yearling she won 378th open from Eastbourne flying 382 miles (no section prize) she then went to Clermont a distance of 506 miles and won 9th section B 21st open. Then in 2013 she won 22nd section B 199th open from Newbury a distance of 321 miles she was then sent to the Gold Cup race from Alencon and won 1st section B 2nd open flying 533 miles. She then went back to the Gold Cup the following year and won 2nd section B 4th open to win her SNFC Silver Award and this year she won 22nd section B 73rd open from Reims Gold Cup flying a distance of 548 miles. Our congratulations go to the above fanciers on winning their national Silver Awards. Joe’s Joke Subject: Florida woman stops alligator with a 25 calibrated Beretta pistol This is a story of self-control and marksmanship by a brave, cool-headed woman with a small pistol against a fierce predator. What is the smallest calibre that you would trust to protect yourself? A Beretta Jetfire testimonial.... Here is her story in her own words: "While out walking along the edge of a pond just outside my house in ‘The Villages’ with my soon to be ex-husband discussing property settlement and other divorce issues. We were surprised by a huge 12 foot alligator which suddenly emerged from the murky water and began charging us with its large jaws wide open. She must have been protecting her nest because she was extremely aggressive. If I had not had my little Beretta Jetfire .25 calibre pistol with me, I would not be here today! Just one shot to my estranged husband’s knee cap was all it took.... The alligator got him easily and I was able to escape by just walking away at a brisk pace. It's one of the best pistols in my collection! Plus the amount I saved in lawyer's fees was really incredible and his insurance was the big bonus. I’m more comfortable now’. The Story of a Long Distance Champion Rosary Beads-Bred & Raced by David Jamieson, East Calder In the spring of 2011, in the East Calder lofts of Davie Jamieson hatched a pigeon the likes of which are few. Banded with the yellow ring marked SU11 CA 858, her hopeful owner was at that time oblivious to what exactly her future would hold. Here we are some four years down the line where this hen, Rosary Beads, could be likened to the Messi of FC Barcelona or the Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. Great teams always have a star, and Davie Jamieson’s superb loft of racing pigeons is no different. Great and superb are two of the many similar words that could be used to describe Davie’s current team, these last few seasons have rarely seen them keep his picture out the paper or his name from peppering the results. Multiple SNFC section victories have been achieved and numerous top 5 and 10 Open prizes have been won, these from far away race points such as Newbury, Reims, Ancenis and Clermont. September 2015 saw him with fifteen pigeons on the Open result from the SNFC Buckingham Young Bird Open, a feat practically unheard of in the area in which he flies. The quality of stock and racers housed in these lofts is the stuff most fanciers will only ever dream of and this is a story about the jewel in the crown of astonishing achievements. Rosary Beads was bred and hatched to a light chequer cock and a red hen, both of which could be considered blue blooded in terms of racing pigeon ancestry. The cock of the pair was the result of an arranged mating between two of Scotland’s finest multiple long distance performance pigeons of the era, his sire being a Scottish National Flying Club Gold Award winner for the late Dale Newcombe. A cock that was given the name Kardale Style - scoring five times at over 500 miles with the SNFC notching up 113th,15thand 55th Open in our Gold Cup race as well as 26th and 84th Open Sartilly. This fine cock was bred by Dale and like many of his prominent winners in the 90s and 00s his breeding was greatly influenced by the bloodlines of the John Ellis of Elphinstone pigeons. John Ellis is most associated with the Lothian Pair, a blue cock and red hen that left behind a dynasty of winners. With terms like ‘Golden Pair’ and ‘Wonder Couple’ being so widely used in the selling of pigeons these days, it’s easy to see why they are often dispelled as myth. That being said Lothian King and Queen more than fit the bill. Their genes can be traced back to those John’s late father, JT Ellis of Haddington had in his loft- a blend of winning lines from; the McCabe Bros of East Calder, Willie Fairgreave of East Saltoun, the Piercey Bros of Spittal and Geordie Robertson of Cupar. The best known daughter of the pair Lothian Lass was somewhat of a flying machine winning a Gold Award with the following SNFC Open positions; 21st,8th,24th,11th,77th,248th and 128th. A son was gifted to Dale Newcombe and went on to breed none other than Kardale Clive’s memory the 1993 SNFC Gold Cup Winner when paired to a Gunn and Cheerie hen. Any cock and hen that bred a racer in the calibre of Lothian Lass would be considered a ‘Golden Pair’ in the eyes of many fanciers. When one considers that eight of her siblings won in SNFC Open competition 8th,9th,21st,22nd,29th,31st,35th,41st,42nd,63rd,66th,68th,123rd,129th,132nd, 153rd,176th,192nd,243rd, between them racing 500-600miles, this could be considered a Platinum pairing. This line of birds not only won for John Ellis and Dale Newcombe, but impacted the lofts of many top fanciers including; John Bosworth, Tom McEwan,Mr and Mrs Smith, Richard & Jamie Combe, Jock Allan, Mr and Mrs Elliot, Joe Mullen,Joe Murphy and so on. There is a reason I’ve gone into depth regarding the achievements of the John Ellis pigeons, when John decided to part with his pigeons Davie Jamieson was fortunate enough to acquire the entire team. Davie reckons around 70% of his present day team have the Ellis of Elphinstone blood running through their veins. He has expressed tremendous gratitude to John-the man he describes as the best fancier he has ever met and is indebted to him, not only for these tremendous birds, but for the advice and friendship he has given him over the years-completely altering his opinions on all aspects relating to the management and preparation of pigeons for long distance national racing. The list of top lofts winning with these bloodlines has only gotten longer since they have been in Davie’s hand as they’ve played a part in outright National winners for the top Solway flyers; Crombie and Mechan, Billy Smith and John Little. Back now to this chequer cock, the sire of Rosary Beads, and a little about his dam. This was a hen of great class; I’ve heard many who handled the bird remark on how she was one of the finest birds they’ve ever seen. Known as the Cholet Hen, Davie obtained her at the clearance sale of J & J Keir of Thornton in Fife. As a 600 mile racer she was every bit the champion winning from this distance on four occasions over three different race points. She won 11th and 60th Open Chenoise, plus 5th Open Tours with the SNFC, before going onto win 3rd Open SNRPC Cholet and earning her retirement. Her breeding is the very best Fife had to offer being down through the Keir’s 4th Open Rennes Hen My Little Lady as well many of the reference pigeons of John Traill of Thornton, who went through a spell in the SNFC’s longest race the likes of which has scarcely been seen before or since. Over the course of four seasons in the mid - 1990s he was able to amass 1st,8th and 30th Open Niort at 690miles as well as 1st,2nd and 30th Open Nantes at 620miles. A true legend of long distance racing into Scotland. After reading the performances and heritage of the Cholet Hen it should come as no surprise to hear she has been a phenomenal breeder in East Calder, in fact she is the pigeon Davie Jamieson hails as the best he has ever obtained. Much like Rosary Beads’ sire her dam is also of immaculate long distance ancestry, a 2007 late bred red hen, her sister is recognised as one of Davie’s best breeders. This outstanding nest pair are bred from birds Davie purchased from his name sake (no relation), the late Matt Jamieson of Annan. The sire of the pair in particular is a bit special and was the pigeon Matt Considered to be the best in his loft at the time. Being three times in the first 22 Open SNFC including 4th Open from the Alencon Gold Cup, it’s simple enough to see why. The Jamieson brothers of Annan are as synonymous a name to pigeon racing in the south of Scotland as Johnny Kirkpatrick and Blue Blitz. Yes, the names of John and Matt Jamieson are considered household, with four National wins between them and a string of 2nds and 3rds etc. there have been few better over the Scottish National Flying Club’s long history. A point I found quite interesting and a little coincidental in this instance was when Matt Jamieson won the Nantes National in 1969 with Border Star, the runner up was none other than Haddington’s JT Ellis. With pigeons so deeply rooted in top long distance bloodlines it is little wonder a pigeon like Rosary Beads has appeared in Davie Jamieson’s loft. On to the champion herself and her young bird season, Rosary Beads is described by her owner as being a fairly attractive young hen, one of a few eye catchers amongst his 2011 youngsters, but little more than that. Not part of his darkness team, a pleasant pearl eye turned in her head and she saw out the federation program with no remarkable proficiency. At this point it’s worth noting that she, as with all Davie youngsters, was given no training prior to entering the first race of 50 miles. To expand on that point, none of Davie’s pigeons young or old are ever taken a training toss at any time. They are expected to exercise well round home and fed in such a way that encourages this. Friends of Davie’s have watched his birds roaming miles from home and with the lack of training by road and a light, carefully thought out diet this becomes habit. The only time they are in a basket is to race. Although showing no real signs of racing talent as a youngster, Davie liked the look and breeding of Rosary Beads enough to take youngsters from her as a yearling. This is not something he usually practices, preferring for the most part to breed off his stock birds and prize-winning racers. As a yearling racer she went through the same procedure as the majority of Davie’s birds at this age, it’s usually a case of a handful of inland races down to the English coast then they are left to mature out for the following season. There have been instances in which Davie has sent yearlings over the channel if they have what he’s looking for come the time. One such example is a red full sister of Rosary Beads which as a late bred took 26th Open SNFC Ypres, a distance of just under 437 miles, in what was only the pigeons fourth time in a basket in her lifetime. In 2013 Rosary Beads turned two years old, by now she had the look of a bird that could do something of note. The fact she had never really shone up to this point is not something that deterred Davie too much. After all it is reasonably common for good long distance racers never to see a clock until sent a long distance. At the beginning of the year the usual procedure was carried out; the birds were paired in February then parted in April to be raced on a form of roundabout. This is the same for all the old bird racers in Davie’s loft before he re-pairs them for a chosen race point. The race point chosen for Rosary Beads this particular season was the Scottish National Flying Club’s longest race. Always a testing event, at times disastrous and in 2013 to be flown from a race point unknown to the club-Ancenis, convoying with the Midland’s National Flying Club. The race took place on the 6th of July with the birds being liberated at 0550. In years gone by 743mls into Scotland has been achieved on the day of liberation, so with the early liberation time day birds weren’t ruled out, even if it was just in hope rather than expectation. News filtered through the MNFC, with the bulk of their birds flying around 200- 300 miles less than the Scottish contingent, were having a sticky one-thus doubts began to form as to whether any pigeons would make it into Scotland by nightfall. There was one timed on the night and in hindsight if only one person was to get a bird on the day it was going to be Scott Irving Jr. for in 2013 his birds flew nothing short of magnificently. Scott clocked his superb chequer hen at 2121 eventually taking 1st Open, although I’m sure it wouldn’t have been an easy night-with timing in so close to race closing into Brydekirk there would always be the fear that someone further north could clock early the next day for the win. Someone did indeed time in 63 miles further north the following day, none other at Davie Jamieson-who clocked his first pigeon at 0446, but had to make do with 2nd Open just six yards per minute shy of the National winning pace Scott had set the previous night. Davie’s first bird was a 3 year old cock now known as White Mick, I’ve had the pleasure of handling this pigeon and would class him as absolutely magnificent. The race was still on, but the fancy had a time to wait until the next pigeons arrived. The third pigeon timed in the country taking 3rd Open for her efforts was the subject of this report Rosary Beads, at the time of 0801 she was a very good pigeon. To be 2nd and 3rd Open SNFC racing just shy of 600miles would do most people, but not Davie Jamieson for he was to time another of his entries as the cherry on top in the form of 10th Open, giving him 1st,2nd and 3rd Section D to boot. I have tried to find another example of a fancier with three pigeons in the first 10 Open from the SNFC’s longest race and I think I’ll be trying for a good while more. After Davie’s success from Ancenis in 2013, the good chequer cock White Mick was, I can imagine, ever so slightly better looking to his eyes than Rosary Beads. This was to change at 2100 on the 7th of July 2014. Again the SNFC were at Ancenis with the MNFC, again it was an early liberation (0610), again Davie Jamieson and Rosary Beads were to the fore. Sent sitting 12 day eggs on basketing day as in 2013, this time she was to fly the 598 miles on the day of liberation-being the furthest flying pigeon in the race to do so. Beaten only to 1st Section by a super pigeon of Tam Fyfe’s she was to be 2nd Section D, 4th Open. I have tried to find an example of a pigeon to have finished twice in the first 4 Open from the SNFC’s longest race and again I think I’ll be trying for a good while more. That Saturday in July emerged a pigeon in the class of; John Bosworth’s Arleen’s Vintage (twice first 5 Open, three times first 15 Open Longest Race), Jim Sanderson’s Loan Frill Lady (twice first 7 Open Longest Race) and Jock Traill’s Nancy (twice first 8 Open Longest Race), fulfilling the ambition of a fancier who got his first pigeons as a boy in 1970 and his first SNFC diploma for 57th Open Sartilly in 1984. A real dream come true. So what was next for Rosary Beads ?I remember reading the race report in 2014 in which Dr Lynch raised the dilemma faced by Davie- keep her going or retire her to stock? Fortunately the decision made in 2015 transpired to be the right one. With her preparation unaltered from the two years previous going to plan it was off to Ancenis again in early July for this long distance champion. It was this third crossing that brought her owner the most joy, despite the fact she never made it home on the night, arriving at 0518 made her the first pigeon timed in Scotland that morning and brought her the section win that had eluded her up until now. Her arrival only marked the beginning of a great morning in East Calder, for another hen was clocked at 0645 and a third at 0813. This saw Davie Jamieson finishing 11th, 15th and 20th Open and taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd from this race point for the second time in three seasons. I mentioned the legendary Jock Traill’s four year run in the SNFC’s longest race earlier in this report and when one considers Davie Jamieson’s 2nd,3rd,4th,10th,11th,15th,20th, and 41st from the equivalent race point over a three year period he has a great deal to be proud of. Rosary Beads performances over this time have earned her a SNFC Silver Award of which will be hard to better. To summarise, this tremendous pigeon has won 2nd Section D, 3rd Open SNFC Ancenis (598 miles) 2nd Section D, 4th Open SNFC Ancenis (598miles) 1st Section D, 11th Open SNFC Ancenis (598miles) A retirement well-earned and with youngsters and siblings of Rosary Beads already showing great promise, I’m sure we will hear more of this great hen as breeder. As a closing thought I’d firstly like to thank Davie Jamieson for giving me the opportunity to compile this short report. Secondly I’d like to congratulate him on breeding and racing this long distance champion. Winning the Open from Ypres, Belgian/French border really is a standout. And winning the Lanarkshire Open and 1st Section SNFC with my blue hen, Misty Blue. Which families of pigeons do you keep? They are Deweert-based pigeons, purchased direct from Belgium a number of years ago. These are a good, all-round family and have crossed in well with other top Scottish National lines, including birds from local fanciers. Recently birds have been introduced from Chris Gordon & JD Staddon. I don’t stick to certain breeds: balance is important, not names. Balance is very important in a pigeon, especially if they have to fly the distance. A typical pigeon of mine is medium in size, mostly of blue or cheq colour with excellent balance and silky feathers Current bid £105 Jonesybhoy Paid Thanks Lot 8 Who Dares Wins OLR Hi Ian, I will be attending the SHU show next saturday, we at the Who Dares Wins OLR would like to donate a £200 voucher to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, this allows a fancier to either enter 1 bird or put the voucher towards entering a 4 bird team which costs £500, we expect the Prize Money to be a massive £50,000 again in 2017, Regards Gary&Annette Current bid £100 ALF Paid Thanks

  10. The Joe Murphy Column Last weekend was the Scottish national presentation and is a very special occasion especially to the fanciers who win trophies. I was going through my collection of birds to add to my Good SNFC Birds when I thought as it is the quite time of the season while not give each of the Scottish national winners some publicity for their wonderful achievements. I will do this over the next few months but start with the race every fancier within this great club wishes to win the Gold Cup race which this year was from Reims and was won by 'Karamojo' raced by George Veitch of Pencaitland. This history maker was sent to Alencon Blue Riband race a distance of 545 miles in 2015 and was timed at 04-45 next morning to win 37th open from an entry of 1416 birds. This year 2016 he flew every 2nd club race out to the 260 mile mark and was exercised 20 minutes morning and night for 4 weeks round the loft. He was then given one 20 mile and one 40 mile trainer flight before going to the greatest race in the history of the Scottish National the ‘Gold Cup’ race from Reims. He was basketed for the main event of the year sitting 5 days on eggs with the convoy of 1323 birds entered by 354 members liberated at 08-45am into a North West wind. ‘Karamojo’ was timed next morning at 05-17-03 to record a velocity of 1062.92 for the 544 miles to win 1st open SNFC Reims and win the following trophies the ‘King George Cup: The Gold Cup: E.T.R.D. Newcombe Trophy (The Flying Festival Trophy) for the winner of the East Region, also the section trophy for 1st bird into section B. The sire of 'Karamojo' is known as 1320 and in 2013 he won 210th open from the Maidstone inland national with the SNFC from a distance of 355miles. The following year he flew the SNFC Alencon Blue Riband race a distance of 545 miles just missing the result. Then in 2015 he won 288th open from the Portsmouth inland SNFC national race flying 360 miles he then went on to win 27th open from the SNFC Ancenis race flying a distance of 600 miles. This year 2016 he again went to Ancenis and won 49th open Ancenis and is now stopped and put in the stock loft. This cock 1320 naturally paired up to his own mother and bred ‘Karamojo’ George’s 1st open Blue Riband SNFC Reims winner. A wonderful achievement and George and his lovely chequer cock are now in the annuals of the history of the greatest distance club in Scotland the SNFC well done George. While on about the Gold Cup race I hope Mike MacPherson of Letham in Angus who wins the Percy Cameron Memorial Trophy for 2nd open and also the 1st section C trophy and Kevin’s club mate Bill Dorward of St Vegans in Arbroath make it to the presentation as Bill also won a couple of trophies these being the H.A. French ‘Jubilee’ Challenge Trophy and the Mrs H.A. French ‘Challenge’ Rosebowl. Angus federation results have improved over the past few years and when you consider that Davie Glen of Forfar won the Ypres race The A R Bowes Memorial Trophy for 1st section E is won by Billy Graham of Uddingston. Other section winners in the Reims race are as follows; 1st section A is John Little of Ecclefechan. 1st section D won by Colin Bain of Ratho, 1st section F won by Liam Byrne of Glasgow and 1st section G won by Dave & Callum McDougall of Peterhead our congratulations go to all the above and to everyone who make the national result. I will cover another national race next week highlighting the winners. George Veitch 1st SNFC Reims KARAMOJO Gold Cup Bill Dorward Good SNFC Birds This week I’m concentrating on the 3 birds from the Kingdom of Fife who won a SNFC Silver Award in 2016 starting with Frank Mitchell of Comrie with his blue bar hen SU11F 3132 named ‘BMS Special’ named after his 3 children Billy, Mary & Scott. This hen won 2nd section C 19th open from Alencon flying 552 miles in 2014 she was sent back to the Gold Cup race the following year and won 12th section C 92nd open and this year she was entered into the longest old bird race from Ancenis a distance of 612 miles and she won 1st section C 39th open and will win The Mr & Mrs J Murphy Trophy for the best velocity in Section C & G. The second pigeon goes to past SNFC winner Hugh Gormley of High Valleyfield who wins SNFC Silver Award with his chequer hen SU12F 3320 named ‘SUSIE’ This 4 year old hen won twice in 2015 being 220th open (no section prize) from Eastbourne a distance of 400 miles. She then went to the last old bird race of the season from Clermont a distance of 527 miles and won 47th section C 142nd open. This year she again won twice in the national being 9th section C 34th open from the Gold Cup race from Reims a distance of 571 miles she was then sent to the lost old bird race from Roye and won 24th section C 76th open flying 513 miles. Our 3rd pigeon is a blue bar hen SU12F 1735 named ‘Mel’s Girl’ raced by Turpie & McCord of Pitlessie as a yearling she won 375th open (no section prize) from Maidstone a distance of 381 miles. The following year she was entered into the last old bird race from Clermont and won 22nd section C 90th open flying 530 miles. This year she scored twice winning 22nd section C 58th open from Ypres a distance of 448 miles and the sent to the last old bird race of the season from Roye and she won 4th section C 16th open flying 514 miles to win her SNFC Silver Award. If you are looking for something good then don’t miss out!!!!! Obituary Marcia Alexandria Rankin, nee Robinson passed away in Wishaw hospital on the 21st of October 2016. Marcia was the dear wife of my dearest friend George Rankin whom I hold as one of the ‘greatest’ fancier’s I have had the pleasure to meet. Marcia was born in the Royal Victoria maternity hospital in Belfast on the 11th November 1942. She passed after a yearlong illness which never dented her spirt and above all her sense of humour and despite her other debilitating illness which she suffered for 25 years, this being Rheumatoid arthritis. She had nothing but praise for the NHS and also the carers who also assisted in the final few months before her passing. After leaving school Marcia worked in various offices before sharing reception duties in the Russell Court Hotel, which her Uncle Harry opened in 1961. Marcia met her husband to be "George Rankin" at a dance in Caproni’s in Bangor early in 1965, only ice cream and cola on the menu. They got engaged on Marcia’s birthday later that year and were married on 16th August 1966. George was a marvellous dancer and he and Marcia enjoyed this hobby very much together. George wasn’t renowned for his timekeeping and Marcia accepted this with very good grace. Her nickname was Saint Marcia because of this!! Marcia had 3 children who loved her dearly, with Richard first then Sharon and finally Gareth. Marcia, George and family moved over to Scotland from Bangor in 1972 with her parents – Nellie and Maurice- and Uncle Harry. They all lived in the same area and she assisted in the family business. Then as her parents and uncle grew older, Marcia was a great support to them and acted as their carer. In the early 90's the first of their 6 grandchildren came along, Owen, followed by Holly, Adam, Lauren, David and finally Madison. She deeply loved them all and this was reciprocated by them. Marcia had a great sense of humour, always teasing her close family and friends with her quick wit and intellect for example her numerous limericks that all would receive by email, courtesy of her IPad. The funeral took place at South Lanarkshire crematorium in High Blantyre on the 28th of October. The family would like thank everyone for their kind condolences and best wishes. Marcia Rankin Joe’s Joke How Old Is Grandpa? Stay with this -- the answer is at the end and it may blow you away. One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The Grandfather replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before: television; penicillin; polio shots; frozen foods; Xerox; contact lenses; Frisbees and the Pill. There were no: credit cards; laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented: pantyhose; air conditioners; dishwashers; clothes dryers; and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and space travel was only in Flash Gordon books. You’re Grandmother and I got married first... and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every woman older than me, "mam". And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir." We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Bible, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege... We thought fast food was eating half a biscuit while running to catch the school bus. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the Queen’s speech on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam....Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a penny. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your penny on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards. You could buy a new Ford Car for £600 …. But who could afford one? Too bad because petrol was only 10 pence a gallon: In my day: "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office, "chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was found in a hardware shop and "software" wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap. How old do you think I am? I bet you have this old man in mind....you are in for a shock! Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time. Are you ready?? This man would be only 70 years old today. THE YOUNG ONES WOULDN'T BELIEVE IT. 14. Join the clan Alf I too was looking for more but a survey is what it is I am not finished just thought it was time for some form of reply The survey threw more questions than answers!! I am trying to get 2 professionals in the bird industry to look at it and give there view I would like to get a vet to look at it also to see his view on it Ian
  15. Findings to date 175 people replied to the survey Comments from statistician no 1 I conclude that more people who do not have YBS use more permethrin and a high percentage use Virkon S Comments from statistician no 2 From the results received, I would say 3 products come to the fore. Virkon S, Garlic and Oil all scored positively amongst those who have not had YBS.
  16. I have sent it to a vet who I have dealt with before but will he answer Also have the opportunity to send it to a poultry specialist which I have taken up The more specialist I can ask the better Any suggestions out there I am willing to try anything or anybody anywhere Ian

  20. The Joe Murphy Column Received an email from Joe Connolly who writes; ‘Hi Joe, The two attached photographs might be of interest to your column. They depict a "mural" on the gable end wall of a neighbour's garage directly in front of Davy Cummins's loft. He lives in Tipperary Town, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. A very picturesque spot situated at the foot of the Galtee Mountains. (It goes without saying that the birds of prey have a right fancy for the area as well which makes it a very difficult location to race to). Davy has kept pigeons for many years but only started racing them three years ago. He is now a member of Thurles R.P.C. which is 25 miles away from him and that journey takes about 40 minutes to drive. It requires quite a bit of dedication to make the two trips (race marking on a Friday night and clock check on a Saturday) every week throughout the season. The mural was painted by a friend of Davy's and after much head scratching and burning the midnight oil (and most likely partaking of many pints of Arthur Guinness), they came up with the very clever caption for the artwork. Both of them are huge fans of the rock band "Thin Lizzy" and one of their biggest hits was called "The Boys Are Back In Town". So they chose that name in honour of Phil Lynott, the lead vocalist and bass player with the band. A stroke of genius if you will pardon the pun; long may Davy's birds come back to Tipperary Town best regards Joe Connolly’. Mural The Boys are Back in Town Genuine Reduction Sale I have been informed by Tom & Scott McEwen of Elphinstone that they are going to reduce their team of birds unfortunately this sale has come about due to the unforeseen health issues of Tom. Who took a heart attack last Christmas and is now reliant on his wife Marlene and Scott to carry out the daily tasks of looking after the pigeons. Therefore it is with sadness that they have decided to substantially cutback the team to a more manageable size. There will be Scottish National and federation prize winners as well as top quality stock pigeons in the sale these will be for sale at their home from Friday 4th November (onwards) 2016 from 9am. So watch out for advert in BHW: strains housed are Deweerdt from International winner Mark Gilbert: The West Durham Amalgamation and Up North Combine award winning Stonehaven Lofts of Paul Stobbs: 1st SNFC Newbury winner Brian Cunningham of Prestonpans as they obtained all Brian’s top stock pigeons when he had to give up the sport. Plus their own Scottish National winning family Tom has won 3 x 1st open Scottish nationals and several birds in the top 10 open positions for example they were 7th open flying 491 miles in this year’s SNFC Roye race with 1135 birds competing. Plus winning an SNFC Silver Award for his pigeon winning 3 section prizes from over the English Channel: Tom has also won the Scottish Homing Union ‘Dewar Trophy’ for Scotland’s Bird of the Year, thus proving the quality of birds within the loft. Tom & Scott have won the East of Scotland federation 7 times this season and without doubt this is their strongest team of birds owned for a few years and are distraught this day has come. You will not get more genuine people than Tom Scott or Marlene as they are the salt of the earth and had it not been for Tom’s ill heath these pigeons would not have been on offer. No birds will be sold prior to the Sale on Friday 4th November as Scott is taking the day off work to assist his mum and dad. Thank you once again Joe for all your help in publicising our club results throughout the year; take care Bernie. Good SNFC Birds Richard & Jamie Combe of Elphinstone with Chequer pied hen SU12E 651 named ‘Setonpark Sylvie’. This hen has won 6 times in the Scottish national starting in 2014 when she won 93rd section B 130th open from Maidstone a distance of 357 miles, a few weeks later she was entered from the Ypres race a distance of 426 miles and she won 26th section B 38th open. The following year she again had an inland race this time from Billericay a distance of 330 miles and she won 197th open but no section prize, however this set her up for the SNFC Gold Cup race from Alencon a distance of 533 miles and she won 34th section B 106th open. This year she again had the same preparation with the inland race from Buckingham a distance of 283 miles and she won 283rd open then set up for the Gold Cup race from Reims a distance of 548 miles she won her 3rd section prize from over the channel to be 29th section B 89th open thus winning her a SNFC Silver Award. We now come to John Baillie of Tranent with his chequer cock SU11ML 1956 named ‘Parksyde Ambition’ this cock won his 4 open positions in 4 SNFC Gold Cup races flying to different locations and it was John’s ambition to win a SNFC Silver Award with this very special pigeon. As a 2 year old he was sent to Alencon a distance of 532 miles and won 135th open flying into the town of Loanhead. The following year again racing to the loft at Loanhead he was sent to Alencon and won 16th section B 44th open doing a velocity of 702 ypm to gain his first section prize. Then John moved house to Tranent in East Lothian in 2015 and the chequer cock was broken to the new environment and continued to home well from the club races with is in mind he was again entered into the Gold Cup race from Alencon and he won 32nd section B 102nd open doing a velocity of 754 ypm. This pleased John as he felt the cock was coming directly home to the new location. This year he set him up for the Reims race a distance of 550 miles and he duly obliged by winning 9th section B 32nd open to win his coveted SNFC Silver Award Our third fancier to win a SNFC Silver Award is Brian Kelly of Chirnside in the Scottish Borders who wins his award with his Blue Pied hen NEHU2011BOR 701 This hen won her first section prize by winning 1st section B 18th open from Clermont a distance of 485 miles in 2014. The following year she again went to the last old bird race of the season from Clermont and won 12th section B 41st open and then this year she was entered into the SNFC Gold Cup race from Reims and she won 16th section B 60th open flying 525 miles. We congratulate the above 4 fanciers on achieving the honour of winning a SNFC Silver Award and wish them well in the future with their pigeons. Joe’s Joke A wife comes home late one night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom. From under the blanket, she sees four legs instead of just her husband's two. She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can. Once she's done, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink. As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine. He says, "Hi darling, your parents have come to visit us, so I let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say hello?"
