Great motivation for anyone Derek. My first year racing old birds which were yearlings, I gave them their first trainer from 20 miles and was left with 8 pigeons. Rab Anderson noticed my post saying it looked like my season was over before it started, sent me a U Tube song, Things Can Only Get Better. I soon realised that I should have had them loft fit before putting them into the training basket, thanks for the education Rab. Anyway, I raced the full Fed programme with the exception of the last race because I was told not to send yearlings to it. I finished the season with 4 from 8 and I was completely inexperienced. Have fun with what you have and keep the chin up. All that can happen is it will be hit again, but I'm sure you'll cope with that.

Andrew, all I know is that Ayrshire are joining us at Wetherby, I'm not sure if that is when we join with South Lanarkshire. The following week, we are all together. I don't know if any other Feds are joining us.

We currently have the SHU, WHU, IHU, NEHU, NWHU and the RPRA. We would require to add all their numbers together. This would give us a false number however, since I am a member of the SHU and the RPRA and I am sure many will hold dual Union membership.

I would say that a close eye is being kept on this, but at what stage do you close the office and move it all into a back bedroom? That is a judgement call that will have to be taken at some time, but we shall have to be ready for that time when it comes. Computer systems are being modernised to streamline the work undertaken and the building blocks have to be in place. Both staff members are performing a good job, but are also both nearing retirement. Just like a business, there are many considerations to take.

I think the number quoted will be members paying their fee, so lofts will be less. This has been considered, but we are not yet at that stage.

The basket used to let you know whether you were on the correct lines, but nowadays we are also looking for the lucky pigeons. I feel we need to use all the indicators we are able to, eye, plumage colour, body lines, feel, whatever, but once they are out the basket it is down to luck that they are able to avoid the hazards.

Take your time with it and you will suss it out. Remember when line breeding you will enhance the bad points as well as the good points, so selection is paramount. What we are looking for are not visual traits, so they are harder to find. The visual traits may serve as indicators that you are on the correct lines.
