Modern day lofts are closed in, doors close flush and most have glazed windows. When darkening lofts down you invariably have to stop light coming in through the vents to get the desired effect, by doing this you’ll no doubt interfere with the ventilation. If you find by stopping light entering the lofts and you've also restricting the amount of air entering/exiting at the same time the best way to get the equilibrium right is to keep less pigeons.

The more pigeons you have up with the leaders the earler they'll pull out especialy so with youngsters. So it all boils down to the better their health/condition the better chance you have with them being up with the leaders.

I have four wooden shutters inside the loft and one outside, the outside on covers a 2'x2' window. The internal ones are closed first, the outside one some 15 minutes later to give them time to perch up for the night. The loft is nigh on total darkness once all the shutters are up.
