  4. training starts from weaning i always but a basket in the loft ith shavings saoles 2issues being cold & on the floor keeps em warm & use to basket i always feed in there at an early stage once through darkness training begins
  5. cocks ere exercising 45mins am hens out pm 45mins & both have been since on eggs only on good days all chipped off now & will basket train once young away
  6. ive tried severals as everyone else seems to, i usually send my widowhood cooks on widowhood but always get to see hen with full contact for a couple of hours as mentioned before it calms them down as they are in the basket for several days ive also paired em up & sent anything from 10days sitting to a baby which seems to ork as not seen a yb all year also by repairing they still keep there fitness after being on the widowhood till you repair. also do the same with widowhood hens for distance also 1hen for the 200mile race which she has won on this system for the last 3years
  7. is he on eggs too? if not he may settle once his hen lays is so is he going into other boxes & fighting?
  8. i always let my widowhood cocks rear at least 1young b4 racing i have in the past had widowhood cocks & some that are late laying win from the same loft.i had a widowhood cock & a hen & a cock both on young come together wining 1st 2nd 3rd i have also paired up then thrown 1st round of eggs so 2nd round all lay together or after rearing a yb spliting em up then repair & all lay together that way too this way all can be put on idowhood together
  9. ive realy had to study ny pairs this year all my racers will rear one young from either them selfs or foster got a new system this year so only one round of ybs for me which should be around 40 in total with the ones i bought too dont have time for 2nd & 3rd pairs & got grand set of old birds so not gonna have much room for too many yearlings next year. also not much chance of loosing many old birds if no channel races too
  10. thanx everyone well good news 1 i thought had been attacked by the hawk returned yesteday must of freaked it out & went off for a couple of days & as weather realy bad & its a late bred think he got lost also heard that one of the other members has seen the hawk off!!
  11. ask for a breed & wean mix it has no maize in
  12. what dont you understand carl!! a cat went in the loft & it didnt stop them winning, so as a joke said you could always chuck in a cat into the loft
  13. the other day a hawk swooped down & grabbed one of my stock birds!! but let go when i raced at with the brush & let go when i hit it. after checking yesterday found lots of feathers & what was left of one of my best stock birds dont think the hawk eaten it all as theres a few cats around which i dont mind as much as they keep the vermin down. i then went into another hut to see another bird gone!! probably a vitim if the dreaded hawk!! there has been lots of attack in my area this week alone another member told me to put up cd,s up on the fench around the loft as apperently from a distance look like owls which scars em. is this true or has anyone got any ideas. i no longer let the stock birds out due to this doesnt realy affect my racers as they exercise for 45 mins then straight in but dead worried when i start to let the yb out in a couple of months. open to ideas
  14. yeah slatey your right it makes em grasp ive been told to use every week!!
  15. must of released 2by me in yorkshire as been 4 pigeon attaacks this week alone mine being 1of em it grabbed one & when i heard the birds bash up it was there stood over the bird & about to start eating it! untill i shouted & scared it off anyone got any tips to keep it away!!!!!
  16. only need one corn bread & wean its got enough protein & all the ybs need till you start to train em when in nest add a hand full of rearing pellets
  17. natral see salt is good for the birds
  18. pigeons are buggers when it comes down to nest building ive had birds use anything from nails!! to twigs & sticks straw, paper, nylon fag butts!! i use shavings in the nest box & bowl & straw @ tob stalks but the bird has its own fav!!
  19. brother & half sister is good ive have alot of success this way
  20. think deputitive has had its day for the use of widowhood i use diet mix, saying that have bought some for the use of mixing some for the stock birds after breeding also for the widowhood hen to stop em from pairing up only till wed then best corn
  21. some birds are different as some cocks get too excited & use too much nervous energy before the race also it can be haerd to show the cocks there hens before the race especialy if you have alot as i try to take the cocks out when they get down low in the bowl before & soeme cocks wanna tread straightaway so its knowing your birds last year i raced some widowhood hens while i went to get there cocks before bthe race a cat went in i got three hens & a cock together & won firt 3 so could try that!!!
  22. i have a cracker of a mealy cock hes been paired to the same hen for the last 3years & he always breed 2mealy cocks from same nest
  23. if i have any problems with parings i either leave the cock or hen locked up in the box and which ever knows there box on the other side so they get to know each other or put them in the young bird loft with plenty of room & both at sometime familier with this loft
