John in ma opinion the lack of response tae your question regards how many are affected is because some of these guys wouldn't miss a race if their life depended on it I.e one week their sending 40 the next their down tae 10 etc and if you ask where's the rest ye get all the excuses bad toss during the week or don't fancy the forecast I know of guys that have had young bird sickness but have never missed a race.so in my opinion they pick out the ones that"LOOK ALRIGHT"? but in my opinion their all affected to some degree

Never use antibiotics as a preventative cos it's a virus and no antibiotic can treat a virus it's the secondary infection that causes all the problems,I've use VETROMOX every year for years and it's never failed me yet turns the birds round in 3/4 days but as you say they look ok but internally they might not be,that's how I said in an earlier post they never go back in a basket till they're flying freely at home and wanting to fly,I've seen guys trying to put them back racing after a week and wonder why they have heavy losses
-
Always goes through my full team but usually find that only 2 or 3 birds have crop retention but I can see it in the droppings in the trays below the stall perches that every bird is affected to some degree with a secondary infection which is what I treat for and treated successfully every time using the same product

Losses in young bird racing says it all tae me del mine had it mild this year as well but I'm clued up enough tae spot it but till their back flying well enough at the lofts they don't go in a basket in fact this year they only got one race and then when I felt they were fit and healthy enough they were trained numerous times out of Dunbar be interesting to see how they do as yearlings if and all is ok then I wouldn't hesitate stopping young bird racing again and just privately train them

John I'm assuming their medicated on return from a race for 3/4 days so by basically the Tuesday and rest of week nothing more is added

in answer to your question john no i don't use antibiotics regularly only when and if required in fact i would say 95% of the time my birds get fresh water and i never get "sick" old birds just on the very odd occassion a slight rise in cocci count and as for something different every year to try and avoid young bird sickness believe me i could write the book and just as a matter of interest john in all the years i've had young bird sickness and there has been a few,i've never once had young bird sickness before them being entered for the first race so is this where they contract it? and the previous poster is right john bosworth openly admits medicating his birds regularly(weekly basis) i think throughout the racing season,i've also been at quiz nights when john has been on the panel and heard him say this so food for thought.another thing john is I attend the deweerd veterinary stand at blackpool every year and buy test kits for the whole season and if i think the birds are a bit off the pace theni have no hesitation in sending a test kit in and in reply to rolands view that vets are in in to make money so to speak deweerd has never forced me to take any of his products if there is something showing in the test.

Canny see how it's down to mismanagement John even the best fanciers in the British Isles get it I.e mark Gilbert,mr Mrs cooper to name a couple and Bert braspenning out width the uk who openly admits getting it every year, who in turn has a great relationship with dr van der sluis so if these 3 fanciers canny avoid it with their resources then whit chance have we got and ps I invite anybody tae come round tae mine and see if ma doos are mismanaged that Comment I take exception tae
