Deep litter in my young bird loft has been down for about 4years and it's nothing but sh#t with nothing added no powders the only thing that gets couped into it is the grit that the young birds don't eat which is given fresh daily as I think this helps break/grind the sh#t down to a powder

Hit myself today Peter, took my eye off the ball for a few seconds as I was upstairs making a cuppa saw the sparrahen hitting a blue as it took off the top of the loft, like you I bolted down the stairs with the blue nearly taking ma head aff as it was coming up the driveway like an Exocet missile,he flew for about 20mins before coming down and running thru the trap on landing.on inspection a few rump feathers missing but otherwise okay, one lucky bird today

i don't think you'll get "on it"anymore quickly than me stevie having experienced it more times than i care to remember i know what the telltale signs are but what i find now is the birds don't take it to the extent they did in the early years when i can remember birds sitting in corners all hunched up with only their beaks against the wall stopping them from falling over
-
stevie obviously these fanciers you are talking about birds are not contracting any secondary infection or it's not ybs there birds are getting cos believe me the birds don't even fly at home never mind coming out of a race basket,my own birds are shut down for a complete week and i personally think they need approx 3 weeks to recover fully enough to even start training them again hence why i quoted earlier that race programmes are not suited to let anyone back into racing their young birds
-
thought i had made it quite clear peter nothing prevents/treats the young bird VIRUS but secondary infections can attack the immune system of the bird when it's at it's lowest ebb ie e-coli which causes endotoxins making the bird very ill is a gram negative bacteria hence why i treat with amoxycillin, all i can say is that it works for me so far without any antibiotic resistance which can't be ruled out in the future and like many have had it for many years and as i said in an earlier post have bought many products and wasted a lot of money trying to beat it,on another note some federation programmes i've noticed for young birds including my own are not catering for any fancier whose birds go down with this illness(and you maybe ask why should they) therefore if my young birds take ill after the first race by the time i have them ready and retrain them the federation will be too far down the road hence no racing therefore inexperienced yearlings therefore losses/loss of revenue to federation and "me" well i'll carry on regardless

therefore roland before YBS cursed us all these years ago every fancier on the continent and and the british isles wen't about the loft as you have stated above otherwise YBS would have been with us from day dot or maybe it has and now it has manifested itself into what our birds get nowadays
-
bought flightpath when they first appeared on the scene and attended the blackpool show, used it for 2 years NO DIFFERENCE,save yourselves a lot of money and don't look for the preventative cos it's not there believe me I've tried everything, treat the secondary infection if it rears it's head,i've always used amoxicillin which I wouldn't go past but that's just me and the birds start to turn the corner after 3/4 days,by the way bert braspenning gets YBS every year and uses one of the top vets on the continent in dr van der sluis and if he can't prevent it what chance have we got and in my own opinion it's nothing to do with stress
-
dunno what it was, could've been something that bound the fibres together i'm sure that year there were a few that were experiencing problems with the black felts so it just wisnae a one off. He bucketed the felts and got the brown coloured ones that he normally used and got his doos back settled on eggs and reared multiple rounds with no problems
-
used the coconut nest felts once after using the traditional nest felts but found they did not fit into the shape of the bowl as good,so reverted back with the bowls being wrapped in newspaper then felt and good oat straw scattered to build on top of the nest felt if the birds wan't to,know of a good fancier in my own club that used the black nest felts a few years back(thats all he could get) and lost all his squeakers days after hatching so i've never tried them hence why i always get my nest felts at blackpool
-
i find it odd that in the past i was often asked by fanciers that had never had YBS what i gave them to treat it or secondary infections associated with it
