  5. Its called a faecal transplant - I didn't see the TV programme, but having suffered from an inflammatory bowel condition for many years - it is a treatment offered more in the USA (but wasn't offered here) Someone with an inflammatory bowel condition ie Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis does not have the abundance of intestinal flora that a normal human being has (for some reason) - one of the treatments offered - again in the USA - is a high concentration probiotic called VSL3 And what did I get? I got an experimental course of antibiotics consisting of 3 powerful antibiotic drugs - one to treat leprosy, one to treat TB and one to treat chest infections (dapsone rifampicin and clarithromycin) I took them for 4 months, and they made me really ill, chest infections I had never suffered from - and I got a chest infection whilst on these medications - and needed an inhaler, mouth ulcers so severe I could not eat - and moreover - it did absolutely nothing for the inflammatory bowel disease
  6. The Use of PrimaLac as an Aid in Disease Control and Prevention in Racing and Show Pigeons. By John Kazmierczak, DVMPrimaLac is a probiotic that has been in commercial and private use for several years. It has proved useful in control and prevention of several diseases in poultry, among which are E.coli and Salmonella infections. Other benefits are enhanced growth, better feed digestion and utilization, along with better feather quality. PrimaLac stands out from other probiotics because universities and other qualified research facilities have tested, documented, and demonstrated its usefulness and health benefits. Also, it has been shown to withstand extremes in temperature and humidity and remains stable up to a year after its container is opened. Its unique formulation ensures that a large portion of what is ingested actually gets into the bowel or GI tract and is not destroyed in the crop or stomach. Therefore, its desired effect is achieved. It is worthwhile to mention what a “probiotic†is. Probiotic is a term which means “for lifeâ€. Probiotics such as PrimaLac are live sources of friendly bacteria that are ingested as a supplemental aid to promote health, growth, and disease resistance. PrimaLac’s desired effect is achieved through adding it to the drinking water. The mechanism of action is to crowd out the bad bacteria, i.e., E. coli or Salmonella and occupy the lining of the intestinal tract (bowel). It also enhances bowel function by promoting a healthy bowel lining to promote absorption of nutrients, produce immunoglobulins (proteins used to fight disease) and make the bowel slightly more acid. Bad bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella don’t thrive in acid environments. It’s little wonder the use of probiotics is found to be beneficial to help our pigeons ward off disease. In choosing a probiotic, be sure to check the label for the type and amount of organisms present to insure stability of the product, especially in extreme temperatures or extreme environmental conditions. Also, it should have been tested by a university or qualified researcher to document its usefulness. There are many probiotics for sale and one should carefully look for background data before purchasing for efficacy. In my own loft of several hundred pigeons, I have noticed many definite, beneficial effects from using PrimaLac for over a year: 1. Young bird mortality after weaning is almost “zeroâ€. This has not happened in the past. 2. Fertility improved, there were less clear eggs, and the young birds grew and developed well. 3. No young birds developed Adeno, Circo, Pox, or Herpes viral infections for the first time ever. (In the past, despite Pox vaccination, some birds always developed “Pox sores†or lesions.) 4. There were fewer young bird losses in training and racing. 5. Fewer pigeons developed E. coli or Salmonella infections. 6. Overall feather quality improved. 7. Droppings are round and firm. 8. PrimaLac can be used with vitamins and most other supplements. 9. PrimaLac can be put in the bath water. 10. PrimaLac can be used with canker and coccidia medicines. 11. Antibiotic usage decreased, thus reducing the development of resistant strains of bacteria and lowering the cost of antibiotic use 12. Feed consumption decreased. I have found it an especially useful disease preventative in damp, cold and hot, humid weather, where bacterial and yeast infections thrive. In-depth discussions with several fanciers have indicated that they too felt it was quite beneficial as a health aid for their pigeons. Overall I have observed no negative side effects from its use, and feel it is a real benefit to help keep our pigeons healthy .John Kazmierczak, DVM

  11. I don't know whereabouts you are Sam - but I use an avian vet in Thirsk He takes cloacal (vent) and throat swabs and reckons that they should only be looked at under a microscope when they are fresh - droppings can be sent by post to him but not swabs - he insists that the swabs have to be fresh samples Here is a link to one of the pages on their website http://www.sandhillvet.co.uk/html/pigeon_service_management_diseases.html
  12. My Windows 10 Upgrade is ready to download I don't like windows 8 (which is what I'm using now) XP and Windows 7 were both fine Anybody used Windows 10 yet? Any comments or views?
  13. We usually buy 500 or 600 at a time - I think the postage is around £6 - so members are just charged the cost of the rings + 1p
  14. We do not bin any rings - they have a lifetime guarantee We return the faulty ones each year with a letter - always with another club order - and the faulty ones are replaced
  15. Thank you all
  16. We had an intermittent fault on one of our rings and changed it 'just in case'. Sometimes when several birds go over the mat together the odd one or two doesn't register. Why - I don't know though

  18. 2 young birds Andy? Forecasts are all to hell - was supposed to be raining all day today according to forecast - but no rain at all today! Forecast tomorrow - rain in the morning and afternoon - we'll see!
  19. Considering the weather forecast isn't so good - our club has sent the most young birds ever to one race - 600 (approx 20 members) We have our smallest young bird team to date - with 2 injured and 3 missing from a trainer 2 days ago - we only have 20 to race
  20. When treating for canker - what did you use and for how long? It is always best to treat for 10 days - as this would also treat hexamatiasis - providing the treatment was suitable - so could be that Symptom checker from Chevita http://www.chevita.com/en/pigeons/symptoms/index.php
  21. Has he been vaccinated for PMV?
