Andy,for many years I am happy to say I have been at the lofts of D Mckinlay of Largs and watched his birds arrive from SNFC races and can assure you they are dots in the sky coming from the south,he has around 30 national tickets and would think that's one of the reasons why,they have no need to go round hills they are above them,as for superior knowledge would say that's what the birds have not us.only my opinion though.
