well guys/girls thanks 4 the replies/advice,after reading more about baytril ive decided against it,i did try to get some medpet 4 in 1 powder but thats a p.o.m as well,i can get amoxicillin but it takes approx 7-10 days to be shipped to me and i cant wait that long, ive given my 3 y/o hen a tablet of amoxiclav as it contains 40mg of amoxicillin and 10mg of clavulanic acid so hopefully that will do some good while im getting the meds sorted? no dead birds today thank god but some looking down a bit, gonna ring round some vets now to see wot i can get, kev

about 10 days ago i found one dead the morning after a hawk strike when some of my birds went missing till near dark so i thought maybe stress or it hit wires(or i conned myself into thinking that)then today i walk in the loft and find a yb and 3 y/o dead,i had noticed a hen yesterday that was having trouble putting weight on her leg but put it down to her knocking it but today when i checked her over i also noticed that if i dropped her she was having trouble flying, they are not drinking any more water than usual and are eating ok? i was only saying the other day how well they looked and now this? can they be checked for paratyphoid by a droppings sample?when i looked the dead birds over they hadnt lost any weight and i couldnt see anything obvious also their crops were empty and i know they came down for feeding yesterday so they aint holding corn,im gutted, kev

thanks 4 the replies chaps, kev -
yeh i know what your all thinking but after reading rolands reply on the hawkers/ferals post it makes you think? i remember reading in the rp or bhw a couple of years ago about a fancier who was given a baby streeter by the local kids and he managed to get a ring on it and race it and unless im mistaken it got to a respectable distance b4 getting lost? bearing in mind that theyve had a bad start to life with a crap diet and diseases it makes you wonder how they get back from 10 miles let alone 65 miles and who knows how far that streeter would have gone on to if it hadnt been moved on? anyone got any stories to share? kev

What'S The Strangest Thing You Feed Your Birds
kev01293 replied to micko and jack's topic in Notice Board
i give mine some brown bread now and again which they love and when they were walking around the garden one day after excercise i threw em some grilled bacon rind cut up into small bits and they wolfed it down,i thought they might look and mess around with it but they loved it? grated cheese is another but they didnt all go for that, kev -
hi all,i want to stock up on some meds for worms, cocci and canker just so ive got em before they get tested, can anyone point me in the right direction for a good online site that theyve used and been happy with? atb kev

i know what u mean roland, some fanciers just dont want to know and expect others to sort it for them,i know its £40 to send for them but its their bird not ours, saying that ive dealt with some fanciers who were happy to send for their birds but if they are flown out and just need feeding/resting then im happy to do that and chuck em up after a few days when they are ready,i had a 4 yr old in totally flown out from a channel race and the weather had taken a turn for the worse over the wk/end and the owner was over the moon when i rung him (it had a tel no ring on) and after a few days rest it was back home in cornwall under its own steam, the owner couldnt have been happier to get his bird back as it had always been reliable and he couldnt thank me enough for giving it a helping hand as they say there is good and bad in everything and pigeon racing is no different
-
i agree with henrick and eastcoaster,i always report strays but its amazing how many fanciers become pensioners when they pick the phone up,if ppl cant afford to send for THEIR birds then they shouldnt send em and then expect others to take care of em when they enter another loft or are found by a non fancier,i had a yb reported in millbrook by a non fancier and when i drove down to collect it the lady was suprised to see me as she had been told that pigeon fanciers never want them back, i reported a bird last year and was told it was of no use to him and then put the phone down on me without even saying goodbye and we all wonder why most lost birds dont get reported some fanciers can afford to breed, ring, feed, medicate, train and send large teams but cant afford to pay to have lost birds returned? our birds our problem and we shouldnt leave others to deal with it
-
yeh i would ring around your local double glazing companies they will prob be glad to get rid of em, it saves em having to pay to pay to have em taken away after theyve fitted new ones
-
totally agree with u just ask, they keep banging on about how its "natural" for bops to hunt but fail to mention all the unnatural things they do when they re-introduce them
-
wot a total wanker,as cruel as it is sammy nothing suprises me anymore especially online, some dxckheads have a strange way of getting their kicks
-
i would keep it at home after it had a lucky escape from a hawk attack on its 1st race and then doesnt show up till the monday from hexham? these fecking things are everywhere now and when they hit our birds the damage isnt only physical but leaves a mental scar as well
-
tooshy boys right, get em sorted b4 youve got more than 4 to worry about and then you wont even be able to excercise your birds, they probably know exactly where your birds are and are just waiting for the ,snack bar, to open,if they are making a racket its gotta be unsettling your birds, hope you get it sorted for your sake and your birds good luck, kev

have had 1 ob stray and 2 yb strays in this year, the ob dropped in my loft after a channel race and was flown out so it was reported via the tel no ring and fed/watered for couple of days b4 being released and getting home to devon the same day as released under its own steam, the owner phoned me to say it was home but its not always that straight forward is it? with the 2 yb,s the first owner drove 100 mile round trip to collect it but the 2nd yb was chucked 30 miles away from me on its own but was back at my loft that day,if it had flown another 15 miles in the same direction it would have been back home? the owners getting back to me on that 1 but it may well end up staying with me?

i get the daily email from s.i.d.c. which gives info on the k index factor after reading about it in the rp in bilcos write ups a few years ago,i think if he is a believer then it is at least worth taking a look at it as ive always found his ideas/theories to be on the money but some think that the k index/presto warning doesnt affect the homing ability as its in space and shouldnt affect the pigeons on earth?? (somebody elses words not mine)

thanks greenlands much appreciated kev

hi,can anyone give ownership details for gb11 L33628, kev

dont it make your blood boil, this seems to be happening more and more fair play to alan for refusing to bow down to these scum, they obviously wasnt pigeon fanciers (for want of a better word)or they wouldnt have had to use sticks? if this was a normal burglary the police would be using fingerprints/dna to catch the offenders so lets hope theyve put in the same effort for alan but somehow i dont think so and even if they were caught they would probably only get a slap on the wrist or a short prison sentence at best, lets hope that they get careless and start bragging and then we can get some justice the old school way, they certainly didnt show the pigeons any mercy so hopefully they will be treated that way if caught
-
do you have any sort of a box you can put the pigeon in or a shed maybe before a cat sees it? if you have any food you can give it such as rice, lentils, barley,or any bird seed that would be good as it probably hasnt eaten for a few days, kev

thats one very determined pigeon, when u look at the state of her it makes you wonder how she got home? kev

is there a letter before the number on the pigeons ring? kev

bilco had a post on another site about bops having been released without the neccasary licence being issued somebody posted that us fanciers should chip in to hire a lawyer to check the ins and outs of it all, something has to be done thats for sure, several fanciers have put forward ideas recently but we all need to get organised and have somebody represent us before its too late if it aint already? did anyone else read bilcos post?
