  1. looks very good indeed and looks like youve did a lot of hard work on it,, birds looking great,, but cant just help thinking , maybe , just a little more ventilation at ground level,, but really depends again on how many birds are in the loft, etc , but birds look superb
  2. good post micko,, handy
  3. agree,,,,
  4. the eagle owl will most def do this ,kill any other raptor roosting near them,[i have proof of that] but as for day light hours , i am unaware of any group of birds that may harrass them,, they are far to fast for any bird ,, even at signalling their presence [as most birds do] these peregrines are so quick, too quick ,even for the warning calls of other birds,, the main danger to them is man ,,,and desease,, caught from pigeons,, canker ,,these birds are very prone to this ..[frounce, in the bird of prey world ]
  5. put them in the photos section [as they would soon dissapear on the main notice board, through the pages ] nice to look back on any future champion they look in superb nick anyway,,good luck

  16. hi david,, as far as i know the "orlick" fancy pigeons are reported of being polish and containing many silvers [dun/sulphers] maybe others could advice
  17. im afraid that names or breeds of birds dont mean a lot to me,, there are many so-called breeds which make good pigeons , there are many so-called" same breeds" which wont :-/ i would prefer crossing pigeons that you intend for distance /sprint, etc with pigeons that are bred from winners or prizewinners of your intended distance , no matter what so called " breed " many "breeds" are either, wattered down through the years, or very inbred,, a good cross from good pigeons can produce a strong hybrid vigour,, only my opinion,, but wish you well
  18. yes, this can be very true indeed [theres a good thread on paratyphoid on the health threads] however, i feel we cant jump to conclusions , without the birds being properly tested,,,,,,,, other probs of this happenning can be,,[1] if youve lights in the loft, then turn them off suddenly without a dimmer ,, birds may not be on their eggs, [2] mice, you may not see them,, but look for signs , they will cause the birds to come off eggs at night, [3] too many pigeons in the loft [im not saying you have any of these probs, merely pointing these things out] this can cause much unrest and stress , fighting etc,, and in this cold weather wouldnt take long for eggs to chill [4] any other disturbances at night , which can be caused by many things but better safe than sorry ,, and get them tested for paratyphoid, which in itself is a very unpredictable test, which really needs to be done repeatedly , to actualy find out if theres traces of it,, hpe all turns out well
  19. very grey looking here now,, but fair , but water not frozen this morning [only me ;D ;D,, long johns under the kilt works wonders , along with wooly hat [on your head off course ;D] ive noticed the water doesnt feexe so readily with a little babies bottle cleaning milton in it,, after sterilizing the water, it will leave a very small amount of salt in the water, which can help in both ways alan ;D ;D ;D if salts that bad for them ;D ;D ;D,, just take look whats in your minerals , grits etc,,,,salt , even bleach,, ;D in your black minerals ;D just acase of a little of what you fancy does you good ;D ;D ;D
  20. hi big pete,, just maybe a rough guide to the darkenning system,, yb,s bred in season, usually moult very heavy during training and racing, which in itself causes much stress to the young pigeon,, the darkening system, is like making summer lightness into winter lightness , which fools the yb into having a full body moult yet retaining its flights [like a latebred bred at the end of the season when the nights are getting darker],, yb,s nowadays are usualy bred pretty early , when weaned put on winter darkness hours by using blinds or curtains etc, but NOT curtailing any fresh air , birds most def need this ,, the yb,s are usually kept in the dark or some prefer a semi-dark from 5pm untill 9am the following morning , this will ensure the yb,s will have a full body moult but retain their flights, making them better feathered for yb racing , usually the blinds or curtains are removed on the longest day, then normal daylight is given,, then the birds are ready to be trained and raced ,, thought should be given at the end of the yb season as these birds will have a second moult , which, at this time should be given every care so that they complete the full moult , buttermilk in their water, plenty baths , some linseed /conditiner at this time will aid these birds to moult fully for the following years racing,, this is only a breif outline, there are many books, discs [i call them videos ;D etc to perfect this system ,, best of luck andhope this helps
  21. hi jase ,, looks like youve built your loft now looking at your fancy pigeon post, between these two posts i hope you get as much info as poss on your fancy pigeons,, good luck
  22. i would suggest breeding a team of yb,s from these birds ,train and race them,, very very carefully [the basket is not the be all and end all ,especialy with yb,s , some fanciers put pigeons into races when their not ready or not fit or havent experience, in this case the basket can be a fools weapon where the fool will blame the pigeon ] i dont know if you have experience in racing pigeons or not,, all the better if you have,, but if you havent , i would read , study, pick up many hints tips from this forum , and above all,,,ask questions,, if these birds are decent bred , treated in the right way,, you would have as much chance of winning or probably ,,more chance if your loft management was better than your fellow flier ,,,best of luck
  23. hi nicki , seems your having a real prob, especialy at a time you could do with out any probs,, its very obviously you loved your grandad very much, you did vow to him you would take good care of his pigeons [which are now yours] i should take any points you feel valid on these postings , and approach the citizens advice, i worked with them for some time and feel sure that due to your circunstances , the c,a,b would do their best to help or advise or,,indeed supply a suitable lawyer poss, even free,,, i certainly hope all turns out well, i can imagine the anguish you are going through at the moment , i certainly wish you, your beloved pigeons, and your near newcommer to the family very well ,,good luck
  24. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D quite a few , i would say ;D ;D ;D but well humerous ;D ;D ;D
  25. looks good to me,, your climate being so different to ours,, probably best advice from someone in ozzy maybe our own lennut tar could help/advice ,, or any fancy pigeon keeper,, my own opinion would be,, looks ideal for the hot weather , but maybe sheilded slightly in winter,, but certainly fresh air does no harm and as other posters have suggested,, beware of any un-wanted preditors that might be able to get in good luck with the breeding of your pair,,, maybe you could let us know how things go,, would be most interesting
