i think it would be ok for a while , then separate them , some cocks race well to a big youngster ,,,but to leave them there would only put the cocks off ,,, an hours excercise eary morning and an hour of an evening,, in between perfect peace , these ybs would not give them that

feed them first in the loft with no water available,, basket them ,, give them a half hour or so,, then let them see and hear the water pouring into the drinkers , theyll soon drink then

in the past i have found this can help, but would aid young birds just even giving this twice a week,, it does no harm at all

yes,,, and usualy they are lethargic,, lose weight and droppings can become loose ,, usualy a secondry infection takes over,i,e cocci count goes up etc , but bringing up their food is the first sign

i dont beleive theres such a thing as a pure strain ,, their racing pigeons, some good, some bad , i would be more inclined to get birds [whatever the so called strain ] that are bred from generations of winners at the distance you intend racing them ,, i would be more interested in management and methods

yes i agree, a very bad show by the vet ,, i had this before, with a pigeon handed in to a vet with a broken wing, but the bird was returned, treated and bound , even allthough i got quite a heafty bill ,, the vet did the right thing,, and trusted me before he even knew who i was ,,,,so , as ive said b4 there are vets and vets,,, this one wasnt , shame on him

sorry to here that debbie,, once their out the basket know one knows what happens to them ,,,,it could well be that theve had a hawk attack and frightened them , this can happen [unfortunately ] at any distance ,, do you know where the strays came from ]i,e previous owners , they could well be back at their old loft ,, i hope you get them back

you asked for that on tammy ;D ;D ;D nevertheless,, the truth ;D ;D brunos,quite right about the" nuts ;D" to put it bluntly , the ones that are sold for wild birds etc can contain mould [this can actualy cause aspergiiosis quite easy ] better from the health shop ,, for human consumtion, [with the shells off ;D],,[they last for ages if unshelled ;D ;D], if you know your nuts, ;D you can easy go by smell , taste and looks [ i bought a bag from pet city a while ago, they were shocking ,,tied bag,,,,far better bought in small quantities [dont give them too much that way] fom the health shop,, and they dont have time to go off

if your that keen ;D ;D ;D [ youll find youll need patience with pigeons ;D] and you get your loft shortly,, you can have [if you want , 4 ybs , ready in 3 weeks, very well bred pigeons [more later if you want ] these birds would be at least flying [homing ] to you , you would be able to let them out ,, even train and race them,,,but would be ideal to breed you a team of yb,s for next year

there are many pigeon loft suppliers,, you can even buy locally,, a garden shed , quite easily converted [cheaper ] i dont have the blakes loft addy but there is one in the west midlanda that seems quite reasonable ,,,its lenches bridge lofts ,,phone 01384 271 730 manufactured and erected wthin 14 days this is at 10, high st,kingswinford, west midlands dy6 8xd,, but there are many places to buy lofts , again , depending on the cash your willing to spend and off couse , the size of loft. petron lofts specialise in these, but can be expensive, with all the fittings

each yb season we can see an increase in disease involving e,coli. ,, e, coli is a normal inhabitant of the digestive system of pigeons, it has disease potential, but usualy needs a predisposing condition to allow it to cause infection,, several things" can open the door" for e coli disease. stress, viral infections, intestinal parasites, andother irritants of the bowel such as chemicals while feilding. the usual predisposing factor for yb adenovirus. it begins appearing when birds are mixed, either in training, races or when birds accumulating fom various sources. the adenovirus by itself will not cause disease, but in the presence of e, coli,,,it allows the e, coli. tocause the disease,, treating e,coli infection usually eliminates symtoms, allthough it does nothing for the adenovirus infection, this is usually conquered by the birds own immune system with time. there is not an effective vaccine for adenocirus, so we must let it run its course as wetry to control the e.coli during outbreaks. usually during outbreaks of e coli infection , we use a broad spectrum antibiotic such as amoxicillan to control it, antibiotics will not prevent it so only use them during an out break,,,,the symptoms usualy include vomiting in some birds, abnormal droppings or diarrhea, and lethargy. the birds will not raceor train well during an uncontrolled outbreak, a faecal culture and sensitivity study will allow one to choose the correct antibiotic to use, often ,we just just go with one that has a" good track record" and this has little or no effect on the birds , allowing oneto continue traning etc. amoxicillan is my first choice of antibiotics when ,",shooting from the hip"it is gentle on the pigeon and is the least expensive of the goodantibiotics, use 3 grams per gallon for about 7 days,, retreatment is often necessary, as things may deteriorate within weeks after treating, as the viral infection spreads through the flock,,,,do not forget NOT to use antibiotics as a preventative,, they will not work as a preventative, but will only allow the bacteria to become resistent to it,,,then it wont work when we really need it,,,,,,dr,david marx d.v.m.,,,,printed by doc j white m,a,d, ;D ;D ;D its allways an insight to this disease , and maybe some fanciers will be interested in this
