in my opinion ,,",setting up a pigeon for a race" is really a big question ,,first of all there's the moult ,,they will moult differently on different systems , but once a pigeon is paired up and after rearing its first round will begin to cast its first flight , usually after sitting 12days approx on its second round , an ideal condition [all-though there's always exception to the rule] is when a pigeon has thrown its first flight and the second flight just beginning to" burst through",,once they have started moulting these flights they will continue,, this is why birds destined for the bigger or longer races [on natural] are paired up to suit this condition in the moult , but there's many other things to consider [there definitely are families of birds that moult slower] first of all i would say know your individual pigeons and know their best nesting condition for keenness , then off course if this bird is to fly a long distance race, it must not be "overdone" previous to the race, it must carry the right amount of fats [this could vary from race to race i,e head wind ,,tail wind , this is the one thing we dont know till their liberated ,, so "setting up a pigeon for a race" is really a big question and very difficult to get right as you dont know what the race will be like i,e velocity wise ,, the worst thing to do in conditioning birds for the distance [on natural] is mating to early and training to early and giving them too many aces ,if a bird was paired on natural in january , by the time the big race came , the bird would be on its 5th flight and preparing itself for a body moult , this pigeon would proove " not to be set up " as it wouldnt be in its best condition for a race in july ,,sorry for the long post but this is a question which a lot would come in to it ,and really couldnt be eplained in a short post, there are many videos ,books etc that go in to this in depth and worth the reading
